Chandigarh drivers top in traffic violations on city roads in 2023: Data

Chandigarh-registered vehicles topped the list of violators on city roads followed by those registered in Punjab, Haryana and then Himachal Pradesh, in the year 2023.

Among the 4,81,143 vehicles penalised through Chandigarh Traffic Police’s e-surveillance on city roads; Chandigarh-registered vehicles accounted for over 55 per cent violations (2,14,373); followed by vehicles from Punjab that constituted 30 per cent (1,42,961); those from Haryana that was slightly above 17 per cent (77,303 vehicles) and Himachal Pradesh that constituted nearly 4 per cent (20,920). Delhi stood fifth with 9,007 vehicles caught for traffic violations on city roads.

As per the data compiled by the Chandigarh police, vehicles registered from other states caught for traffic violations in Chandigarh are Uttar Pradesh (6,395), Uttarakhand (2,552), Jammu & Kashmir (2,359), Rajasthan (2,143), Maharashtra (658), Gujarat (513), Madhya Pradesh (326), and 1,633 from states including Bihar, Nagaland, Kerala, etc.

E-surveillance modes used by the traffic police to detect violations on city roads, include CCTV cameras, handi-cameras and speed-radars, along with social media channels like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and WhatsApp groups, officials said.

Although the number of traffic violations detected through e-surveillance mode is quite high, it was yet 45.77 per cent less in 2023 (4,81,143 vehicles) as compared to 2022 (8,87,352 vehicles).

A traffic police officer said, “The trend suggests that people have become conscious about e-surveillance. Earlier, there were presumptions that cameras do not work during night that proved false when challan slips landed at the registered houses of vehicle owners for violating traffic rules during night time.”

The officer said that the incidents of one vehicle committing multiple violations, including over-speed and jumping red lights were reported.

“A total of 4.81 lakh vehicles were issued e-surveillance challans. This exclude the violators who were challaned manually. A total of 9.2 lakh challans were issued, including 4.81 lakh through e-surveillance,” he said.

Approximately 4.5 lakh challans were issued for red-light violations, followed by 1.2 lakh for zebra-line crossing through CCTV cameras in 2023. Additionally, 1.8 lakh challans were issued for speeding, and 23,238 for driving without helmets.
