The Directorate of Census Operations of Himachal Pradesh has won the first prize for implementation of the official language,Hindi,in the northern region. IAS officer Balbir Tegta,the Director of Census Operations,was presented the award by Union Minister of State (Home affairs) Ajay Makan at a function in Dehradun on Friday. The directorate was selected by the Home Ministry (Official Languages wing ) on the basis of parameters and gradings relating to the use of Hindi in official works. Shimla stood out among northern Directorates in using the official language. Himachal’s census directorate has received the award after 15 years. “Grading is done considering various activities like sending and receiving letters,fax,e-mails,noting,drafting and dictation undertaken in Hindi,” Tegta said. The awardees are selected on the basis of performance reflected from quarterly reports and also from inspection by a committee constituted by the ministry.
