Candidates dangle development carrot

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Bansal today said that Foreign Direct Investment in retail would be beneficial for the country. He said that even in countries much smaller than India where 100 per cent FDI is allowed,shops have not been shut down.

Bansal was addressing a gathering at Sector 35 where he kickstarted the campaign of candidate Chander Mukhi Sharma,contesting from ward 15 comprising Sectors 34,35 and 44. His opponent is Akali Dal candidate Harjinder Kaur,the sitting councillor from the area.

Bansal said that the production in the country was high and perishable goods tend to go waste due to lack of infrastructure and with FDI,these problems would be solved.

Bansal said that Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab first welcomed FDI and then went back on their word.

“The Opposition is not letting the Parliament function. The same was done the whole year in the Municipal Corporation. The sitting councillor from the area despite being the mayor twice did not do as much work as should have been done,” he said.

Chander Mukhi Sharma has revolved his campaign around the slogan “Change for Development of ward 15”. Addressing the gathering,he said that the ward has not seen development for the past 15 years. He assured people of development in the area if elected.

Bansal also visited Faidan village. Senior Congress leader and incharge of Punjab and Chandigarh Gulchain Singh Charak was present at these programmes. He said that Congress would be victorious in Punjab as there was a lot of frustration among people about the current SAD-BJP government. Chandigarh Congress chief B B Bahl and Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh were also present. A rally was organised at Maloya by the Youth Congress.

Meanwhile,Congress candidates campaigned in their respective wards. Residents of Sector 15,the office bearers of Welfare Association of Sector 15,office bearers and members of the Senior Citizens Welfare Association decided to extend support to Congress candidate Anu Chatrath. She is the sitting councillor from ward 2.

Gurbax Rawat,the party’s candidate from ward 9 met the residents going door-to-door seeking support. Rawat,an IT professional,promised people that she would ensure development of the area.

Candidate from ward 26 Arshad Khan interacted with people of Bank Colony,Indira Colony and Peepliwala Town. He has assured the people in his ward that he would concentrate on holistic development of the area. He would bring the areas at par with various sectors and ensure proper water supply,improve roads and street lighting,develop recreational facilities,emphasise on provisions for sports and give special attention to women and youth related issues.

Devinder Singh Babla continued his third day of campaign in Sector 28 government houses and RBI Colony,Sector 30. Babla said that the maintenance department of government houses which is now under the Administration will be brought under the MC.

Another Congress candidate H S Lucky today visited government houses in Sector 20-B. He met government employees and assured them that he would take up their issues once voted to power.
