Tucked away in Chandigarhs Sector-10 market, the name of this fine dining restaurant might give an impression its got something to do with the Maximum City. But thats just the initial surprise when you walk into the 64-cover,Bombay Chopsticks, since it specialises in Chinese cuisine. The restaurant, which is an off-shoot of a popular Chinese restaurant chain from Ontario,Canada, kept Bombay in its name, since most people in Canada associate India with Bombay.
Having heard encouraging reviews,we reserved a place for a working lunch on a busy weekday. The restaurant has patio seating too,but given the heat,we settled for the indoors. The ambiance remains basic and non-fussy and the only give away of its South-Asian roots is a giant Buddha statue placed at the entrance.
A glance at the appetisers including a separate From the grills section got us more excited than the main course. So without much fuss,we ordered a clear chicken wonton soup,a lemon coriander soup,a portion each of crispy lotus stem chilly garlic, jumbo prawns in salt & pepper and grilled fish. The service was prompt and even though Bombay Chopsticks focuses on a single cuisine, there was a wide selection on offer.
The chicken wonton soup was spot on with delicate flavours. The lotus stems are something most Chinese restaurants get right and this place did not disappoint either. However, the highlight for us were the prawns and fish. Light and easy on the palate, they had a smoky-grilled flavour to it. Special mention goes to the sliced chicken in oyster sauce and chilly garlic chicken noodles. The sauces were distinct and the fare being dished off-the-grill was surprisingly light.
Apart from the garlic noodles,we recommend their grilled tiger prawns in spicy basil. For those who prefer to play it safe, settle for a not-too spicy oriental vegetables in Cantonese sauce; Kung Pao chicken for a main course works well too. The main course pairs well with an array of rice (an ignored section in other Chinese eateries in the city) and noodles on offer. There is mixed meat fried rice,Malaysian coconut fried rice, chilly chicken biryani (the only fusion dish on the menu) to the more popular Pan fried noodles or Pad Thai noodles. The super fine Singapore noodles made from rice vermicelli can however take some getting used to. Though most of us skip desserts,we recommend their home-made Basil ice-cream,which was as flavoursome like the rest of the fare.
