Cameraman ‘slapped’ by cop,journalists protest

High drama prevailed at the Tagore Theatre on Monday when a UT Police official allegedly slapped and pushed the camera person of a local news channel.

High drama prevailed at the Tagore Theatre on Monday when a UT Police official allegedly slapped and pushed the camera person of a local news channel.

The media persons staged a protest outside the Tagore Theatre when they were allegedly stopped at the gates. The media men were going inside to cover a sports award ceremony by the Punjab government.

According to the complainant,“When we asked an ASI about the parking space,the ASI misbehaved with us and eventually started beating my cameraman with three other cops. He also broke our motorcycle and took the keys”.

The SHO,Inspector Harjit Kaur said,“The media men joined the cavalcade of the Punjab CM. They were stopped for security reasons. No one slapped or manhandled any media person”.

However,DSP East,Vijay Kumar,after reaching the spot said that proper investigation will be done. A medical examination of Tara Thakur,the camera person who was allegedly assaulted was conducted.

“The Chandigarh Press Club has condemned the incident and demanded strict action against the police men who misbehaved with the press,” said the president of the Press Club,Sukhbir Bajwa.

Bajwa also added that a delegation of journalists will be meeting the IG on Tuesday for the same.
