A multitude of abstract representations of reality is what Hemant Malhotra has depicted on canvas,in his ongoing solo show in the city, titled Expressions. The 50 works evoke several images abstract, defined forms and open interpretation of colours on the plane. The works in oil and acrylic on canvas have been created over several decades. While the themes are varied, these invariably include references to the daily life and various shades of nature. For instance,Rainforest is inspired by the view of heavy rainfall in the dense forests near Kullu, while Sunset brings to life the gorgeous colours of sunset on a partly cloudy evening, from a hilltop in the Kullu valley. The exhibition was inaugurated by renowned sculptor and painter Shiv Singh, who noted that the works on display were suited for anyones art collection. His treatment of oil on canvas is what makes the work truly stand out, with several textures emerging with the innovative use of other materials such as sand and wood, added Singh. Malhotra says the process of his art is one in which the first few strokes, particularly the first ones, are well thought-out,after which the colours and strokes flow naturally. This natural flow of colours is quite apparent to even the casual viewer, adds Malhotra, who has been painting since childhood, and has studied both commerce and arts.
*The exhibition is on at Punjab Kala Bhawan,Sector 16,till October 13
