MPS from the Bahujan Samaj Party, along with the local leaders of the party, met the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil. Adiscussion was held on providing basic amenities at Deep Complex,Hallomajra. The BSP leaders further demanded compensation for the families of those who had been suffering from diarrhoea at Mauli Jagran.
BSP MPs Narender Kashyap and Avtar Singh Karimpuri along with convener of the city unit Haffiz Anwar-ul-Haq as well as councillors Jannat Jahan and Naresh Kumar were part of the meeting with the Administrator.
The demand for regularizing the construction at Deep Complex has been raised for many years. The residents of the Deep Complex area were entitled to vote in the elections for the Municipal Corporation, but the civic body is not authorised to provide any facilities in the area. Water is supplied through tankers. Infrastructure like roads and the sewerage system cannot be provided to the residents. Lately, local leaders have demanded that while the process for regularisation is being completed, the basic amenities should be provided to the people of the area.
Area councillor Jannat Jahan had met Patil during a public hearing session during which he directed the officials to provide basic amenities like drinking water and a working sewerage system to the area. These are, however, yet to be given.
The leaders took up the issue of compensation for the residents of Mauli Jagran who had suffered from diarrhoea. There had been several deaths in the area and a large number of residents were detected with the disease.
The delegation further demanded that the need based changes in houses made by the Chandigarh Housing Board be regularized. The residents of these houses have been holding protests and demonstrations over the issue for the past few months.
