Paddy procurement from Oct 1,Punjab sets target of 140 MT
Chandigarh: Paddy procurement in the state will get underway on October 1 and conclude on December 31. For this purpose,1,745 procurement centres have been set up across Punjab to procure a 140 lakh MT paddy by government agencies.
Among these,whole Pungrain will procure 20 per cent,Markfed 23 per cent,Punsup 22 per cent,Punjab Warehousing Corporation 11 per cent,Punjab Agro 10 per cent and FCI 10 per cent.
According to the food and civil supply department,procurement will continue without any holidays. The Minimum Support Price of Grade A Paddy had been fixed for Rs 1,110 per quintal and Rs 1080 per quintal for general variety. The agencies had been also asked to indicate at least one alternate storage point,where paddy could be stored in case of any exigency. A temporary purchase centre will operate only during the procurement period and no permanent staff of the procurement agency be posted their round the year,said an official.
A man kills wife for not giving birth to a son
Hoshiarpur: Frustrated at not having a son even after 12 years of marriage,a man set his wife on fire in Hoshiarpur. A
mother of three girls,Pinki died at a hospital on Friday. Before her death,in a statement in front of the magistrate,Pinki had alleged that her husband Neeraj had set her on fire on September 13. Nirmala,the mother of the victim,said that Neeraj used to torture Pinki physically and mentally as she could not give birth to a male child. Pinki was in hospital for the last 10 days with 70 per cent burns on her body. A case has been registered against the husband,who is absconding.
Pollution board orders to shut 21 units
Amritsar: Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) issued notices to 24 industrial units including stone crushers,brick kilns,service stations,plywood manufacturers,hot mix plant & rice shellers,located at Pathankot,Gurdaspur and Amritsar,which were found violating the provisions of environmental laws. Some 14 industrial units were advised to be sealed or closed. The decision has been taken after the units were given opportunity to present their case to Birinderjit Singh,chief environment engineer of the Board. Three units,with minor violations,were allowed to operate against the assurance in the form of a bank guarantee.
Dal Khalsa asks Brar to quit
Amritsar: Dal Khalsa on Friday demanded that the chief Gurdwara Election Commissioner Justice (retd) HS Brar should resign for failing to hold free and fair Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee elections. Party spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said that Brar choose to look the other way despite violation of electoral process as exposed by the media. It was Brars way of returning the favour to the (Parkash Singh ) Badal government for appointing his daughter as a top law officer in state advocate generals office, he alleged in a statement.
SAD councilor joins PPP
Jalandhar: Sultanpur Lodhi municipal councilor,Shiromani Akali Dals Jaimal Singh,and 55 other party activists joined the Peoples Party of Punjab here on Friday. Sources said he was feeling ignored ever since the incumbent municipal corporation president Dinesh Dhir refused to vacate the seat. As per an agreement he was to remain president for two-and-a-half years with Jaimal to take charge for a similar period. He had taken up the matter SAD leadership but to no avail. However,on he said that he has joined PPP because of its good policies.
Excise officer’s two sons held for theft
Phagwara: Three youths,including two sons of an Excise and Taxation Officer,were on Friday arrested for allegedly stealing laptops from a private university here,police said. Amritpal Singh and Karanpal Singh,both sons of the ETO,and Sarabjit Singh were arrested for the theft in Lovely Professional University (LPU) on September 13.
