Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan said that the paddy arrival in the mandis until October 2 was 17,951 metric tonnes out of which 17,331 metric tonne had been purchased, meaning 96.54 per cent procurement.

The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has objected to the condition under which the government agencies will procure the produce up to 25 quintal per acre only. Citing higher production of paddy, the BKU wants this cap to be revised to 30 quintal per acre.

The government has advanced procurement of paddy by five days. The official date of paddy procurement had previously always been October 1, because majority paddy crop starts arriving in mandis only after October 9-10.

Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal said that paddy procurement will continue as usual but added that the state government would be losing about Rs. 4,000 crore every year after these laws come into effect.

The officials said that last year around 4 lakh tonnes paddy was arriving daily in the state markets by this time but this year the daily arrival has reached only upto 2.09 tonnes till October 14.
