NRI shot in court complex,BJP leader booked

Amritsar: A man was shot dead on Friday by four assailants on the Batala civil court complex here. The police have booked Bharatiya Janata Party municipal committee councillor Rajbir Singh Bhullar and his brother Yadwinder Singh Bhullar for the murder of Gurinder Singh,a non-resident Indian who had settled in Canada,but was putting up at house on Kahnuwan Road,and had come to the court to appear in a pending property case,police said. Gurinder’s relatives said that there was was an old enmity between the two parties and the victim had been getting threats from the accused. The assailants used a pistol and a revolver and shot Gurinder six times,killing him on the spot. The police have registered a case under sections 302,389,148,149 of the IPC and 25,54,59 of the Arms Act. Raids are on to nab the accused.

Pollution board’s workshop on cancer

Patiala: The Pollution Control Board would hold a workshop on the incidences of cancer in Punjab on September 12 in Chandigarh. A press release quoting pollution board chairman KS Pannu said the objective of the workshop was to assess the incidence of cancer in state viz-a-viz national and international scenario. “The workshop shall examine whether the incidence and cause of cancer in Punjab is different from that of another states of the country,” Pannu said,adding that the workshop would be attended by experts in the field of cancer.

R K Handa is NIA’s special prosecutor

Chandigarh: A city-based advocate has been appointed Special Public Prosecutor of the National Investigation Agency in the Samjhauta Express blast case. “Advocate R K Handa has been appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor of the NIA which has filed the charge sheet in the Samjhauta Express blast case,the hearing of which will be held in a special court at Panchkula in Haryana next week,” an official notification said on Friday.

3-D virtual studio in Punjabi University

Amritsar: Punjabi University’s Media Centre on Friday became the first of its kind centre in the region to start producing programmes of extremely high quality after vice-chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh launched the new 3-D Virtual Studio on its premises here.
