Another house collapse in Amritsar,one killed

AMRITSAR: Another house collapsed,this time at Kot Khalsa Colony,early on Tuesday killing a person identified as Balwinder Singh. With this six buildings have collapsed in the last 48 hours in the city. In a related development,bodies of two women,identified as Geeta,and her daughter Mehak,were pulled out from under the debris of a house at Guru Bazar that had collapsed on Monday. The administration has identified more than 300 buildings as unsafe to to live in,but nothing has been done to evict the families living in these there.

Five killed in road mishap

KAPURTHALA: Five persons,including four of a family died,three on the spot,when the car in which they were travelling rammed head-on into a truck near Subhanpur on NH-1 on Tuesday. SHO,Subhanpur police station,Hargurdev Singh said that the car was coming from Amritsar side when a motorcycle suddenly came in front of it at an intersection. The car driver,while trying to save the motorcyclists,rammed into a truck coming from the opposite side. Police booked the motorcyclists under various sections of IPC including 304 (A). Among the killed were Kartar Singh (77),his wife Vimla (73),son Jaspal Singh(55),Jaspal’s son Raja (28) and driver Prem Singh (40).

SAD releases third list for SGPC polls

CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal relesased the third list of 33 names for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC) elections slated for September 18. With this the SAD has announced candidates for 130 seats and only seven seats remain to be decided. As per the third list,Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan would contest from Gurdaspur while Gurcharan Singh Grewal,president,Sikh Students Federation would contest from Jagroan. The current SGPC vice president Kewal Singh Badal would seek election from Mullanpur Dakha (SC). The party has given Chandigarh ticket to former mayor Harjinder Kaur. The SAD has also replaced Bibi Davinder Kaur from Garshankar seat in Hoshiarpur District and allotted the ticket to Ranjit Kaur.

Khangura is PCC man to interact with NRIs

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Amarinder Singh on Tuesday appointed Qila Raipur MLA Jassi Khangura,a former NRI,to initiate interaction with various NRIs,groups and organisations in the USA,Canada and Europe to set an agenda for his trip to these places later this year. In a letter issued to Khangura,Amarinder asked Khangura to utilize his forthcoming trip to US,Canada and the UK for the benefit of the party keeping in mind next year’s assembly elections in the state.

Punjab suspends doc who treated V-C

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has put under suspension the Dr RK Garg,who was on emergency duty,at Civil Hospital,Fatehgarh Sahib,Dr RK Garg when the Vice-Chancellor of Guru Granth SahibWorld University,Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia,who was shot at on August 1,was brought in. Garg has been suspended and charge sheeted for dereliction of duty. The Health and Family Welfare Minister Satpal Gosain had earlier asked the director,ESI,Dr Satwant Bhalla to conduct an inquiry. The report submitted by Bhalla revealed that Garg failed to summon any medical nor surgical specialist to treat Ahluwalia who was brought in precarious condition at 3.37 pm. He also didn’t even bother to inform his superiors.

Girl falls in trench,run over by truck

KAPURTHALA: An open trench dug for laying sewer line on Sultanpur Lodhi Road led to the death of a Class XI student. The deceased,Priyanka,was mowed by a truck when her bicycle,which she was riding,fell into the trench. A student of Senior Secondary Government School,Satnarayan Bazaar,the girl died on the spot. “She could not make out that a trench was ahead because it was filled with rain water,” said an eyewitness.

Gurnek Singh appointed acting V-C

Fatehgarh Sahib: Eminent Sikh scholar Dr Gurnek Singh was appointed acting Vice-Chancellor of the SGPC-run Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University. Dr Gurnek Singh,a former head of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Study Chair,Punjabi University,Patiala,took charge of his new assignment initially for a period of four months,a university spokesman said. Dr Gurnek Singh had joined the Punjabi University,Patiala,in 1979.

Dalit activists burn effigy of Prakash Jha

Phagwara: Demanding a ban on the screening of soon to be released film ‘Aarakshan’,some Dalit activists on Tuesday burnt the effigy of the film’s director Prakash Jha. Surinder Dhanda,President of Ambedkar Sena and a host of other activists presented a memorandum,addressed to the Punjab Chief Minister,to the local SDM Manpreet Singh. Claiming that reservation was their constitutional right,they accused Jha of playing with their sentiments. The leaders appealed to the CM to take immediate steps to stop the film’s release,scheduled for August 12. They warned cinema houses and multiplex owners not to screen the film without the consent of Dalits. “In case they do so,they should be prepared to face the music,” the leaders said.

Mansa farmers’ stir a political gimmick: SAD

Chandigarh: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday said the recent farmers’ agitation in Mansa district of the state was a political gimmick. “It (the protest) is a political game against the interest of the state,” the Shiromani Akali Dal president told reporters here. Farmers in some villages in Mansa district are up in arms against setting up of a power plant in Gobindpura. During their protest recently,a farmer had died in a clash with the police.
