Dal Khalsa criticises Bathinda MP for fall in district’s sex ratio

HOSHIARPUR: Dal Khalsa today took a dig at Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal for failing to protect the girl child despite her high-profile campaign to contain female foeticide under the nomenclature of Nanhi Chhaan. Dal Khalsa congratulated the people of Hoshiarpur,one of the most backward districts of the state,for showing respect to the girl child and coming first in Punjab in literacy rate as well as sex ratio — 962 females to 1000 males. As per the Census 2011,the sex ratio in Bathinda region has gone down from 870 to 865,said party spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh. He said Harsimrat has spent a huge amount on literature,TV ads and series of programmes to create awareness against the social evil. “While Punjab saw increase in sex ratio,which was a positive development,ironically there was a decline in Badal’s hometown”.

Amritsar sex ratio,literacy move up

AMRITSAR: Amritsar district,which has recorded a population of 24.90 lakh,including 13.22 males and 11.68 females,has shown a slight improvement in the sex-ratio and literacy in the last one decade. In 2001,the the total population of the district was 21.57 lakh. The literacy rate of the district was 70.04 per cent which has jumped up to 77.20 per cent and interestingly the rural areas witnessed a hike of 7.5 per cent in literacy while the urban areas witnessed only 5.0 per cent increase,showing that the people in the areas are becoming aware of the importance of education.

BSF constable arrested after drug haul

AMRITSAR: As suspected,the seizure of one of largest consignments of heroin,recovered by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) earlier this week,had the Border Security Force (BSF)’s involvement. The recovery of 75 kilograms of heroin,worth Rs 375 crore in the international market,had baffled the security agencies and today a BSF constable,deployed with 41 Battalion,identified as Gurcharan Singh,was arrested in this connection as he helped drug peddlers smuggle narcotics from Pakistan.

SSOC recovers Rs 2.85 lakh fake currency

AMRITSAR: State Special Operation Cell (SSOC),wing of counter-intelligence,Punjab,today recovered Rs 2.85 lakh fake Indian currency notes from two smugglers.
