Golden Temple no-vehicle zone again,residents protest

Amritsasr: With the civil administration and the police enforcing the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s directive to declare the Golden Temple complex a no-vehicle zone,residents protested the blockades put up by the traffic authorities on Thursday. They said no alternative had been provided to them to reach their business centres,shops and even homes from the place where they were being asked to park their vehicles. They also resented the “hefty parking fees” being charged and said their business would be badly affected. The police authorities,meanwhile,said they would not remove the barricades at any cost,adding that the vehicles of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee would be stopped too and told to take alternative routes to ferry goods for the Golden Temple complex.

I-T raids on Patiala distillers,Jindal group units

Patiala: Income Tax sleuths raided the premises of Patiala Distillers and Manufacturers in Patiala and Jindal group in Sangrur on Thursday and found certain “incriminating documents pertaining to financial transactions”. The extensive raids started early in the morning and were carried out simultaneously on almost 20 premises of the groups spread over Patiala,Sangrur,Chandigarh,New Delhi and Solan. The operation was carried out by the department’s investigation wing,falling under the jurisdiction of Directorate of Investigation,Ludhiana. The raiding team was led by B K Singh,Additional Director of Investigation,Ludhiana; and Rajinder Kaur,Deputy Director of Investigation,Patiala. The raids were conducted on the basis of “substantial evidence regarding tax evasion practices” of the groups,said sources. The groups have emerged as major players in distillers and manufacturers of Vanaspati ghee,transformers and ginning plant among other ventures in India. I-T officials confirmed that documents regarding financial transactions were being scrutinised at various sites.

Draft electoral roll for SGPC polls

Chandigargh: On the basis of enrolment of voters for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections,preliminary draft electoral rolls will be published on October 1. A spokesman of Gurdwara Election Commission of India said on Thursday that claims and objections related to the inclusion or exclusion of any names could be presented to the appropriate revising authority from October 1 to 28. No form has been prescribed for filing claims and objections. The commission has appealed to all interested political,religious and social organisations to come forward and assist the claimants in filing objections.

‘Elementary teachers’ stir unjustified’

Chandigarh: All zila parishad chairmen called upon Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday and asked him not to give in to the demand of elementary teachers to shift them from panchayati raj institutions to the education department. They said the demand was absolutely non-acceptable and unconstitutional. A deputation of chairmen said the these teachers were already enjoying all facilities and benefits that were provided to the employees of education department. The deputation said the sole objective of these teachers was to get transferred to cities.
