HC stays attempt to change Wakf Board composition

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday stayed the operation of an order passed by the Punjab government whereby nomination of Shamim Ahmed,member of the Punjab Wakf Board,was withdrawn. The said notification was passed on September 19. Counsel for the petitioner,Rahul Sharma,contended that Shamim had been nominated as a member of the Punjab Wakf Board by Punjab as it was unable to constitute an electoral college to elect members.

25 units found discharging effluent

Jalandhar: In a surprise raid,25 electroplating industrial units were found discharging effluent into sewer,which later opens into river Sutlej through Est Bein. The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) chairman KS Pannu said that strict action will be taken against the errant units.

Man booked for killing girl

Patiala: The Local police on Wednesday booked a Patiala resident Iqbal Singh (34) for the murder of a 26-year-old girl Jaspreet Kaur of Nabha. Police said Singh,a married man and father of two,Iqbal was in a relationship with Jaspreet. DSP D S Brar said they met in Patiala on Tuesday evening and drove towards Hardaspur where he first strangulated her and then hit her with a spanner. Later he consumed sulphas,a pesticide. He is under treatment at Rajindra Hospital.

Jewellers shot at by robbers

AMRITSAR: In a daylight robbery,two armed youth shot at Ramesh Chander and his son Rahul,a jewellery shop owner,at busy Majitha road on Wednesday. They were taken to the hospital where their condition was critical. Eyewitnesses said that the youth entered the shop and asked for gold items. They gathered the jewellery and started rushing out of the shop and when the shopkeepers raised alarm on which the duo opened fire.

Record power generation by BBMB

Chandigarh: Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Wednesday said a record power generation of 7,000 million units has been achieved during April till September 20,which is the water filling season for Bhakra and Pong reservoirs. Cumulative power generation of the year till date is not only the highest in the last decade but is also 23 per cent more than the target of 5,670 MUs set by CEA,official release said.

Land record on Internet a big hit with NRIs

Jalandhar: Land records of two districts – Kapurthala and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar – have been put on the web for the first time in state as part f a trial run to put the land record of the entire state on the web. It is very useful for the NRIs who face a lot of land related dispute back home as they will be able to cross check the land records even while sitting abroad. Anurag Verma,Commissioner Jalandhar Division,while giving details about the project informed that now any land owner from these two districts can visit the http://www.plrs.org.in and check his land records. Verma said that the site has become popular and about 17,500 people have already visited it.

Punjab gears up to conduct caste census

Chandigarh: The ITI Limited in collaboration with the Punjab government will conduct socio-economic and caste census in the state. Punjab has appointed 13,059 enumerators along with data entry operators who will visit each and every house to conduct census till October 31 to collect the data,an official release said. Deputy Commissioners have been made the Principal Census officers for rural and urban centres except Municipal Corporations where the Municipal Commissioner has been made the Principal Census officer. BPL census was last conducted in 2001.

4 lakh Dera volunteers sweep Delhi roads

New Delhi: CLOSE to 4 lakh volunteers of the Haryana-based Dera Sacha Sauda sect carried out a massive ‘clean Delhi’ campaign in the Capital on Wednesday. The city was divided into 13 zones and 329 sectors and the organisation provided 8 lakh brooms and other equipment,including vans to pick up waste. The campaign was inaugurated by the sect leader,Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh,at 8 AM at Rajghat.
