Hosiarpur: Three migrant labourers were crushed to death when a speeding car crashed into their makeshift hut on Monday. The victims,identified as Shiv Kumar,22,his father Balinder Singh and Roop Lal,were sleeping in the road side Jhuggi (hut) when a car rammed into it. Police have registered a case and probe is on to to locate the accused.

Engineer’s Day function on Sept 15

Chandigarh: A state-level function to celebrate the 44th Engineers Day will be held at Ludhiana on September 15. Stating this,R P Singh,the engineer-in-chief,Punjab PWD,said that all the engineering departments are expected to participate in the function. An exhibition will also be organised to give companies dealing with the engineering products to showcase their latest innovations and products.

Examination forms for PG courses

Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University on Monday announced the dates of submission of examination forms for all postgraduate regular and private examinations,which fall under the semester system commencing from the current academic session. Dr R K Mahajan,Professor In-charge (Examinations),said students can submit their admission forms for the December semester examinations till September 10. For the May 2012 semester examinations,students can submit their examination forms till February 10.

Water discharged in Beas,Satluj rivers

Chandigarh: Beas and Satluj rivers in Punjab witnessed increased discharge from Pong Dam,Naushera Mirthal and Dhilwan in Beas,Harike and Hussainiwala in Satluj. Around 17,565 cusecs of water was discharged from the Pong Dam against the inflow of 31,547 cusecs. While there was discharge of 7,060 cusec in Beas at Naushera Mirthal and 25,000 cusecs in Dhilwan,Satluj also witnessed discharge of 29,255 cusecs from Harike and discharge of 21,369 cusecs from Hussainiwala. The water level in Pong Dam was 1,385.76 feet against it maximum capacity of 1,390 feet. On the other hand,the water level at Bhakra Dam on Monday touched 16,76.94 feet,while its capacity was 1,680 feet.

Director of Ayurveda dept suspended

Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Monday suspended Dr Rakesh Sharma,Director of Ayurveda,with immediate effect. According to a official spokesman,Sharma has been placed under suspension for appointing Dr Pashupati Nath Sharma as the project director and another official,Jaspal Singh,without following the stipulated procedure .
