Amarinder rejects Central panel’s report on Hansi-Butana canal

Chandigarh: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday rejected the preliminary report of the Central Water Commission (CWC) submitted to the Supreme Court,which said,Hansi-Butana canal and toe wall posed no flood threat to Punjab. In a letter to the CWC chairman,Amarinder said that canal runs from west to east while Ghaggar and Tangri flow from north to south. “The construction of the canal itself has led to blockade of water from these two rivers and now a concrete toe wall will further block the water that will ultimately be pushed back towards Punjab.”

Capt trying to mislead people: Badal

Chandigarh: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday said that state Congress President Capt Amarinder Singh was trying to mislead people by challenging the ruling party for an open debate. The real forum for the political debates was the state assembly,Badal said,adding that instead of taking up issues concerning the state,the Congress had only been staging walk outs. He said said the Congress government at the centre has always been meting out step-motherly treatment to Punjab.

In two minds on giving info,ADC fined

Chandigarh: Laxity in providing information in time bound manner has proved costly for the Gurpreet Singh Khehra,the Jalandhar ADC,who is also the public information officer at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. One Rabinder Singh had sought some information through an RTI application. On not receiving the desired response,he moved the information panel,and during the first hearing,Khehra was served a show-cause notice. However,he sent an aide with a reply stating that he was “in two minds on whether to provide the information or deny it.“ Finding the reply unsatisfactory,the State Information Commissioner Kulbir Singh imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on Khehra.

Former BSP MLA joins PPP

Chandigarh: Nirmal Singh Nimma,a former Bahujan Samaj Party legislator from Bhadour Assembly constituency on Monday joined the People’s Party of Punjab. Nimma said the issues raised by the PPP were the need of the hour and he would support Manpreet Singh Badal unconditionally. Nimma was accompanied by several other BSP leaders.

Congress flays case against youth leaders

Amritsar: The Congress party on Monday extended all support to Bhupinder Randhawa-led Sangarsh Committee to protest against Mayor Shawet Malik and to get Indian Youth Congress and National Students Union of India (NSUI) activists,jailed in a ‘fabricated’ case of assault on the Mayor,released. DCC Gurdaspur head Sukhjinder Randhawa said that the final countdown for the Akali- BJP government in the state has already begun.

Man throws acid on wife’s face

Jalandhar: A man threw acid on the face of his wife as she stood waiting for a bus near Doaba Chowk on Monday morning. Sources said that that the victim,Archna,32,a journalist with a vernacular newspaper and her husband,Ashoke Kumar,were having strained relations. Married for 15 years,the couple have two children. Police have booked Kumar and an accomplice under section 307 of IPC. The accused is still absconding.
