Celebratory firing at wedding kills 23-year-old in Bathinda village

Bathinda: Makhan Singh (23),who was part of the caterers’ group serving food at a wedding function,lost his life when a man opened fire during the ceremony as a mark of celebration. The incident occurred at a marriage hall near Kot Fatta village in Bathinda district on Sunday. The bullet hit Makhan,a resident of Nangal village near Ratia,on the chest and he died on his way to the hospital. Till the filing of this report,the police were trying to identify the person who opened fire. “We are questioning the guests who attended the ceremony. We will also watch the wedding video,” said Bathinda SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill.

SGPC sends 5-member committee to Haridwar to settle gurdwara row

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has dispatched its specially constituted five-member sub-committee to Uttarakhand to study the situation arising out of a controversy related to a piece of land to be allotted to Gurdwara Gian Godri Sahib at Haridwar. SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said the committee comprising Sukhdev Singh Bhaur,Karnail Singh Panjoli,Harsurinder Singh Gill,Waryan Singh and Bharpur Singh Khalsa would meet Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and apprise him of the issue and urge him to facilitate allotment of the land. In a statement issued on Sunday,Makkar said a gurdwara was to be built in the memory of Guru Nanak as he had visited Haridwar in the 15th century.

All revenue records in Amritsar to be computerised by March 2011

Amritsar: The archaic system,built by the British in the 19th century,to maintain land records is set to give way to computerised data storage in Amritsar. Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu said while reviewing the project at the Attari sub-tehsil on Saturday. He said about 70 data entry operators are engaged in the computerisation of land records of the district and that the work would be over by March 31,2011. After this,he said,accessing land records would be just a mouse click away.

380 kg fake cottage cheese seized

Amritsar: In a major crackdown,the district health department seized 380 kilograms of synthetic cottage cheese,one tin of fake desi ghee,and 50 litres of synthetic milk from a van belonging to the Batala Milk Centre when it was supplying the items to dairy owners in Rambagh market here on Sunday. This is the second major crackdown on adulterated eatables in the last fortnight. Acting on a tip off,Food Inspector Sukhral Singh said,they raided the Rambagh market when vehicles of Batala Milk Centre,run by one V P Dogra,were delivering cottage cheese to the dairy owners who expressed doubt over the quality of the product. The cottage cheese and milk were made from milk powder while traces of refined oil were found in the ghee after their samples were tested.

Veterinary officers to get NPA from April ’11

Chandigarh: The veterinary officers of Punjab animal husbandry department will get Non-Practising Allowance (NPA) with effect from April 1,2011. The decision was taken by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at a meeting with representatives of the Punjab State Veterinary Officers’ Association,where Animal Husbandry Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike was also present. Association president Dr Ashok Sharma later said the decision would not only benefit the vets,but also livestock farmers as they would get treatment free of cost. Association general secretary Dr Sukhdev Singh and senior vice-president Dr Santokh Singh urged the CM to regularise the services of rural veterinary officers working on contract basis under the rural development department.

Pojewal gets a lift irrigation system

Jalandhar: Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal laid the foundation stone of Pojewal Lift Irrigation System under the ongoing Kandi Canal project and inaugurated a deep tubewell at Chandpur Rurki village on Sunday. He said Rs 126 crore would be spent on the lift irrigation schemes at Pojewal and Bhaddi villages to provide irrigation facility to the agricultural land at 98 villages in Kandi area. Sukhbir later attended a religious function held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Baba Gurditta Ji.
