Murder accused dies in Amritsar jail

Amritsar: Harpal Singh,28,a resident of Mehsampura village under the Mehta police station,who was standing trial for murdering his stepdaughter,died in mysterious circumstances inside the high-security Amritsar Central Jail on Monday. His body was found in a bathroom and the jail authorities said he died of heart attack. Sources,however,said he had been under depression and committed suicide by hanging himself,using the cord of his pyjama. There were talks of a suicide note being found,but the authorities did not confirm this.

Paramedics threaten fast unto death

Chandigarh: About 51 paramedic employees of the Punjab Health Department would observe fast unto death on December 12 if their demand for regularisation was not met. Stating this,Amarjit Singh Sekhon,president of the Paramedics Contractual Employees’ Union,Punjab,claimed that after their recruitment in 2007,about 400 employees were regularised,but their case was not considered. He claimed they had the support of various staff bodies.

Man gets death penalty for killing four members of wife’s family

Bathinda: The court of District and Sessions Judge,Muktsar,J S Klar awarded death penalty to Shalinder Singh,a resident of Baam village in Muktsar district,for killing four members of his in-laws’ family,including a four-year-old girl,in June 2007 over a property dispute at Gandhar village. Shalinder gunned down his father-in-law Sadhu Singh,mother-in-law Jaswinder Kaur,brother-in-law Sadhu Singh’s wife Surinder Kaur and her daughter Harmanjot. The name of Shalinder’s father Rajwant Singh,too,figured in the FIR but the court had acquitted him.

Central university in Bathinda on National Knowledge Network

Batinda: Central University of Punjab,Bathinda,has been included in the 80 prestigious institutions of national importance that are being connected with the National Knowledge Network. According to a statement issued here,the university will be connected with other institutions of higher learning through this high-speed computer network being set up by the Centre. This network will allow the university to use specialised applications like high-performing computing facilities,e-libraries,virtual classrooms and large databases.
