AMRITSAR: Asserting that the SGPC polls have little meaning if the Sehajdharis are not allowed to vote,the newly appointed in-charge of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee’s Intellectual Cell SRS Lally Majithia on Sunday said it was unfortunate that major sections of Sikh society were being left out of the Sikh body’s electoral process. In a statement issued here,he justified the stand of former CM and his party’s state head Capt Amarinder Singh stating,“The ruling SAD (B) and the SGPC is trying to divide the society. Due to their parochialism they have confined the voters to the Sikhs,little realising that there is major section section which will not be able to vote”.

CBSE asks schools to follow Spring Dale

AMRITSAR: Impressed by Spring Dale Senior School’s efforts to conserve heritage by adopting the Pul Kanjari,the Central Board of School Education (CBSE) Chairman Vineet Joshi urged other schools in the region to adopt such monuments to help conserve them. Joshi addressed around 50 CBSE affiliated schools from Majha region during a Principal’s Meet,organised in collaboration with Sahodaya Schools Complex on Sunday. The Spring Dale initiative,according to the CBSE officials,will be recorded in ‘Sahapedia’,an open online resource on Indian culture,heritage and arts.

Bhakra level nearing capacity

CHANDIGARH: The water level at Bhakra Dam on Sunday touched the 1679.84 feet water mark against a maximum capacity of 1680 feet. According to an official spokesman,water level on this day during the previous year was recorded at 1680.14 feet. The inflow in the Bhakra Dam was around 43,278 cusecs and release was recorded at 32,381 cusecs. The release on the same date last year was 44,784 cusecs. According to data released by the Irrigation Department,the water level at Pong Dam has touched the 1387.85 feet level whereas its capacity is 1390 feet. The water level at Ranjit Sagar Dam has touched 524.40 metre against a capacity of 527.91 metres.

PPCB raids 14 factories in Gobindgarh

PATIALA: The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) raided 20 industries at Mandi Gobindgarh and found 14 of them were violating air pollution norms,a press statement by the PPCB said on Sunday. Board Secretary Babu Ram said 10 teams headed by environmental engineers raided 20 induction furnaces in Mandi Gobindgarh and found 10 major violations. The industries that were found violating norms include Jassar Multimetals,Bhatia Steel,AK Multimetals,Devgan Alloys,M R Alloys,K L Alloys,Dashmesh Alloys,ANJ Metal Recycling,Talasri Steels and Jogindera Casting while 4 others were guilty of minor violations,Ram said. Ram said that action was being initiated against the violating units and no unit that was guilty would be spared as the Board was adopting a zero tolerance policy in this regard.
