Ludhiana has more critical priorities than horse,dog-racing: Khangura to Sukhbir

Chandigarh: Reacting to reports of Punjab Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s decision to build dog and horse racing tracks in Ludhiana,Congress MLA Jassi Khangura on Tuesday said the city and its people were crying out for basic amenities. Terming it a mockery of citizens who,according to him were in dire need of basic services and grappling with a multitude of problems,Khangura said the decision was a last ditch effort by Sukhbir to retain power.

Medical store licences made easy

Chandigarh: To ensure medical store owners can obtain or renew their licences easily,the Punjab government has divided the state into five zones: Amritsar,Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar,Jalandhar,Ludhiana and Bathinda. Health Minister Satpal Gosain,on Tuesday,said the store owners can now secure fresh and renewed licences from the headquarters of the five zones. Earlier,the owners had to visit the main office in Chandigarh for the process.

Govt bodies to maintain ‘reserved’ roster

Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Tuesday issued directions to educational institutions,corporations and federations urging them to maintain roster registers that have details of representation given to Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes. Disclosing this here an official spokesman said the strict guidelines will ensure employees who come under such categories will not face problems during promotion.

Bhullar issue in UN

Chandigarh: The Sikhs of Justice on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the UN Secretary General demanding the world body’s intervention in the Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar issue. The memorandum has sought UN intervention under a resolution that calls upon member states to abolish death penalty.

BSF-Pak Rangers discuss border issues

Amritsar: Various border related issues including constructions close to the LOC,firing incidents,drugs trafficking and more interactions including organising inter-services sports events came up for discussions at the monthly Border Security Force-Pakistan Rangers meeting held on the Pakistan side of the Attari border on Tuesday. BSF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) C Vasudevan,who headed the Indian delegation,said the two border forces have decided to hold sports events.

Jalandhar man drugged,robbed of car,cash

Hoshiarpur: A Jalandhar resident,Aala Singh lost his Innova vehicle,Rs 15,000 cash,driving license and ATM cards after he offered a family a lift in his vehicle. According to the victim’s complaint to the police,he was going to Chintpurni when a family which included two men,two women and a child asked him for a lift to which he obliged. After a while,one of them offered him a soft drink which he consumed and subsequently found himself beside a road at Mubarakpur near Amb in the morning. The police have registered a case.

HP Vidhan Sabha session from Aug 23

Shimla: Governor Urmila Singh has convened the eight day long monsoon session of the state Vidhan Sabha from August 23 to 30. Immediately after the governor issued the notification,Speaker Tulsi Ram also released a tentative calender for the six sittings of the house.

Hydro projects remain shut

Shimla: Some of the mega hydro-power projects including the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam in Himachal Pradesh remained shut for the second day on Tuesday as there was no let-up in high silt in the Sutlej water. This has resulted in a huge shortfall in the availability of power in the entire northern belt. The 300 MW Baspa hydropower project of the Jaypee Group,however,became operational on Tuesday.
