Residents in tribal areas of Lahaul and Spiti district and Pangi in Chamba district have been confined to their homes due to unprecedented heavy snowfall during the last four days. Many areas are under as much as three feet of snow. The fresh spell of snow received on Thursday morning in Keylong — district headquarter town of Lahaul and Spiti – was recorded at 10 inches. Deputy Commissioner Lahaul and Spiti Rajiv Shankar said,“District administration is on the vigil due to unprecedentedly heavy snowfall in past four days. People are not venturing out of homes and telephone lines are disrupted. However,no loss of life and has been reported”.

Himachal gets three ‘Diamond’ state awards

Vice President of India Mohamand Ansari on Thursday presented ‘Diamond State Awards’ to Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal for the state’s best performance in three key sectors — Education,Poverty Alleviation and also overall performance.

The state has been adjudged best in the country in the three sectors on the basis of a nationwide survey done by Nielsen Network.

‘High level of uranium in Malwa water’

A recent survey conducted by a group of scientists from Department of Physics,Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU),in some parts of the Malwa region has found high content of uranium in drinking water. The maximum concentration level was found up to be 1000 per cent parts per billion (PPB) and 644 PPB is too common in the drinking water samples. Dr Jaspal Singh,from Department of Physics,GNDU,said in a written statement that in a single village,out of the 11 water samples collected,eight showed more than 500 PPB,which is much more than the limit prescribed by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India,which is 60 PPB.

Amritsar mayor accused of misusing powers

The management of Sacred Heart School here has accused Mayor Shawet Malik of making unreasonable demands,and then harassing the school authorities for not humouring him. According to the management,the mayor had asked them to admit four students but as they could accommodate only three,the mayor set raiding teams from various departments on the school. Principal Sister Lucy said,“There were over 12 officials from sewerage department,municipal town planners and house tax department,accompanied by police. There was no notice served and we were treated as if we were criminals’’. Malik,however,said these were routine raids. “It was not me but the school staff who misbehaved. I am first citizen of the city and they did not connect me to their Principal,” said Malik,adding that he did not misuse his position.
