Free education for girls
CHANDIGARH: Punjab is all set to launch a scheme to provide her free education to girls up to Class 12 from July 1 this year. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said government has taken this step to encourage the poor families to educate their girl child. He said the government has set aside Rs 26 crore for educating girls. Also,he said 1.46 lakh girl students in Class 11 and Class 12 will get bicycles from the government on Independence Day. The government has set aside Rs 75 crore for this scheme.
Punjab CJI hospitalised again
CHANDIGARH: A day after he was discharged from the hospital,Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Ranjan Gogoi was re-admitted to hospital after he complained of stomach pain. As per available information,he has been diagnosed with infection in his stomach. His condition is stated to be stable now. He has extended his leave till June 24.
HC gets final report on DCs probe
CHANDIGARH: The two-member committee constituted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to probe the alleged siphoning off of funds by Deputy Commissioners of Punjab and Haryana has submitted its final report to the high court.
The report was filed on the basis of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Resurgence India,a Ludhiana-based NGO.
Advocate A P S Shergill,counsel for the petitioner,had claimed that in addition to central government funds,money collected locally for Kargil war victims,Orissa cyclone and Gujarat earthquake was found to have been misappropriated and used for other purposes.
Duranto to start from July 31
AMRITSAR: BJP general secretary and MP Navjot Singh Sidhu today said the Duranto train between Amritsar and Chandigarh would start running from July 31. It would depart Amritsar at 5.30 am and arrive in Chandigarh at 9.30 am,while in the return leg,it will depart Chandigarh at 7 pm and arrive in Amritsar at 11.15 pm. The train would run on Monday,Tuesday,Thursday,Friday and Sunday.

NAWANSHAHR: Police arrested Bharti in the fake visa case. Bharti has been managing the main office of the Dubai Tours and Travel at Janakpuri in New Delhi. Two gang members were arrested from here on Monday.
Rs 5 cr worth heroin seized
NAWANSHAHR: Police seized 1 kg of heroin worth Rs 5 crore from Hardip Singh of village Varpal in Amritsar district. The accused revealed that he had received the supply of heroin from one Sukha near Pakistan border in Amritsar.
