The Bridge Market in Sector 17 is all set to have a new look. Renovation in the area is going on in full swing. The market had been a picture of neglect for the last many years and was a contrast to the Plaza, which is thronged by residents. The area is getting new flooring of concrete, kota stone and bricks. New lights would be installed in the area and the Public Health department has completed laying of sewer lines. It had been a long-pending demand of shopowners that the area be developed and better facilities be provided. They rued that due to the condition of the market, number of shoppers visiting the area was dropping. Apart from the Bridge Market, other parts of the sector are also undergoing renovation, including the area near the Estate Office and Bank Square. Projects worth Rs 4.5 crore have been sanctioned. Half the cost of renovation was to be borne by the UT Administration and the remaining by the Municipal Corporation. Earlier, work had come to a halt after the contractor, who was assigned the task, left it midway. The civic body took a few months to find another contractor. Area councillor Pardeep Chhabra said,”Different parts of Sector 17 would get a new look. Work is going on at a fast pace. Renovation would be complete by the end of this year. Some projects are nearing completion. The aim is to give shoppers and tourists all facilities needed.”
