The S&P BSE Sensex fell 392.24 points (0.97 per cent) to end below the critical 40,000-mark. The 30-share BSE benchmark settled at 39,888.96 on Wednesday. The broader Nifty 50 on the NSE cracked 119.40 points (1.01 per cent) to end the day at 11,678.50.

HCL Tech was the top loser in the Sensex pack, followed by Sun Pharma, Titan, Tech Mahindra and Bajaj Auto. On the other hand, NTPC, ONGC, HUL, Asian Paints and Tata Steel were trading with gains.

The S&P BSE Sensex crashed 806.89 points (1.96 per cent) from its previous close on Thursday to settle at 40,363.23, while the NSE's Nifty 50 fell 251.45 points (2.08 per cent) to end the day at 11,829.40, in the process it fell below the 12,000-mark.

HDFC, Kotak Bank, HUL, Nestle India, RIL and NTPC were among the top laggards in the Sensex pack, shedding up to 1.05 per cent. On the other hand, IndusInd Bank emerged as the biggest gainer, rising up to 3 per cent, followed ONGC, Sun Pharma, SBI, TCS and Axis Bank.

The S&P BSE Sensex climbed 428.62 points or 1.05 per cent to settle at 41,323.00, while the broader Nifty 50 index ended at 12,125.90, up 133.40 points or 1.11 per cent.
