After Samrala Major,it was the turn of Buddha Nallah to suffer a breach due to heavy rains, which continued on Wednesday. Seven-foot wide breaches occurred at two points at Partap Singhwala village, while the nallah was overflowing at four other points, flooding various colonies of Ludhiana.
A major tragedy was averted as three electricity poles installed along the nallah near Joshi Nagar fell in the water, along with a transformer attached to one of them, only a few minutes after the feeder had tripped.
While Dhoka Mohalla was four feet under water, the other colonies that were flooded due to the overflowing Buddha Nallah were Gopal Nagar,New Kundanpuri,Salem Tabri, colonies around Tajpur Road and Bhamian Kalan. At Partap Singhwala village, the breaches were being plugged till the filing of this report. Repair work was also being carried out at four other points of the nallah. Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari,Municipal Commissioner A K Sinha and Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh took a round of all bridges on the Buddha Nallah. As the heavy downpour was still on,their official vehicle got stuck at different points. They have deputed one officer at each bridge to start relief operations as soon as the nallah starts overflowing at any point.
MC Commissioner A K Sinha said: The nallah was cleaned well in time, but the overflow occurred at a few points because the water pressure was huge. Such heavy rain was unexpected. Darshan Singh Brar, executive engineer of drainage department, said: The water from Partap Singhwala went towards the vacant land where builders have planned colonies and construction work is yet to begin. Repair work is on. In Salem Tabri area,a Tata 407 was submerged and its driver came out of the vehicle with great difficulty.
Missing man found dead
The death toll in Samrala villages due to floods increased to two on Wednesday. While a farmer had drowned on the first day of the floods,a missing brick kiln worker,Sri Om, in Bondli village was found dead on Wednesday. His body was lying in a drain. The worker was missing since Sunday when the breach occurred in the Samrala distributory. The situation in 24 villages is still critical. Villagers of Oorna wanted to cut off the main road to divert the flow of water, but the police stopped them from doing so. They held meetings with the people to stop them from fighting over water issues.
Dhussi dam in danger
The water level at Dhussi dam in Kasabad,Mattewara,Madhepur and Manewal villages has also reached the danger mark. Villagers have decided to patrol the area at night to sound an alert in time in the event of a breach. A drainage team is also at the site.
