Once Punjabi cinema’s poster girl,Kulraj Randhawa,in the city for a restaurant launch, says she is eyeing a comeback

A packed house waited patiently for the “star” to arrive. She did — and like a typical screen heroine — a good one hour late. The opening of Venky’s Xprs,a quick service restaurant chain,in Sector 35 roped in actor Kulraj Randhawa for the official launch on Friday.

The Chandigarh di kudi, who started with Punjabi films and then shifted base to Mumbai,is now the face of the poultry products chain in Punjab. Dressed in a short dress designed by “good friend” designer Nishka Lulla,Randhawa looked very different from her chubby days when she debuted in the Punjabi film Mannat opposite actor Jimmy Sheirgill.

“In the industry, one has to keep up appearances,” says the actor flashing the dimples she’s famous for. The pout is hard to miss now. Coming home to “the fans” and an audience that hasn’t yet forgotten her refreshing roles in Punjabi films,“feels nice,” admits Randhawa.

Though she starred in Chintuji alongside veteran actor Rishi Kapoor in 2009,played Bobby Deol’s love interest in the hit,Yamla Pagla Deewana and starred in the box office dud Char Din Ki Chandni opposite Tusshar Kapoor, the actor has given Punjabi films a clear miss.

“It’s not intentional. I just progressed to Bollywood as I didn’t want to do the same kind of roles in Punjabi cinema,” explains Randhawa, confessing that she has found the going tough in the Mumbai film industry. “I am very conscious about the films I choose and don’t want to do everything that comes my way. This is not easy,” she says.

The days of Punjabi cinema’s NRI-love stories are long over and the recent hits have caught her attention. “There have been offers in the past but I am now keenly looking for an offbeat Punjabi film,” says Randhawa, adding that she has a surprise in store for the audience.

“No,I am not turning director but I will be involved in the production. It’s time to move away from the landscape of Punjab,it’s green fields and the likes,” she says. Randhawa has also signed her next Bollywood film with Raj Kanwar Productions and is tight-lipped about divulging the details.

“Let’s talk chicken for now,” she quips, before rattling off Venky’s press statement — including details on chicken feed — like a trained professional.
