Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has completed 41 years of existence and celebrated its foundation day here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion,experts stressed on knowledge-based education,which is relevant to the society,and changing of education pattern with developments and societal requirements with time. They said interdisciplinary studies should be strengthened and research in basic sciences for growth of applied science should be stressed. Speaking on Development of Science and Education in Relevance of Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev,Prof C L Khetarpal,Director,Centre for Biomedical Magnetic Resonance,Lucknow,sought to make education society-oriented. Renowned poet Dr Surjit Patar and Sahitya Academy,New Delhi,Vice-Chairman Dr Satinder Singh Noor,too,presented their views on the occasion. Others who spoke included Vice-Chancellor Professor A S Brar,Registrar Dr Inderjit Singh and Dean,Academic Affairs,Prof Surinder Singh. Prof Khetrapal said: This day should be devoted to analyse what we have done in the past and what we are doing for the future. He said no Asian university had till date produced any Noble laureate. Encouragement to research in universities leads to new discoveries as almost all Nobel laureates have been produced by the university system, he said,adding that brain drain was the biggest challenge being faced by various universities. Our talent is gradually moving westward, he said. Prof Khetarpal also inaugurated an exhibition of rare books and manuscripts at the Bhai Gurdas Library and a folklore exhibition at Sangat Hall. A painting exhibition was also held.
