The annual Rose Festival rolls out. Heres looking at the opening day
One of the highly anticipated events in the citys cultural calendar the annual Rose Festival rolled out yesterday at the Rose Garden amidst much fanfare. The inaugural day of the three-day festival saw heavy attendance,with the flower arrangements and vegetable and fruit carving being the centre of attention. Incidentally,this year an additional 275 varieties of roses have been added to the existing bouquet of 593 types of roses.
One of the highlights this year is the inauguration of the special musical fountain designed and developed by the Tourism Department of Chandigarh Administration. Buzzing with activity was the Leisure Valley that was host to the popular food court and childrens amusement area.
Keeping with tradition,the Rose Festival promises to pack in lots of cultural activities. The first day saw a folk dance competition followed by an evening of Bollywood songs titled Mehkati Sham.
Day two promises to be equally action-packed. On the cards are the the much-awaited Rose Prince and Rose Princess contests followed by Rose Quiz,Antakshari and a photography competition. Announcing the arrival of spring is the kite flying competition,also slated for day two,besides a fashion show at Leisure Valley by designers Libas and Ananmika. Model-actors Shahwar Ali and Mreenal will be the showstoppers for Libas,followed by a dance performance by actor Koena Mitra.
