Hundreds of farmers, trade union leaders and villagers attended the cremation of farmer leader Sadhu Singh Takhtupura, the organising secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan group) who was beaten to death in full public view in Bhindian Saida village in Amritsar district on Wednesday.
BKU general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri said they wanted to donate Sadhu Singhs body to a medical college, but the doctors refused their plea saying the police had kept the body with them for over 30 hours.
The BKU has lodged an FIR with the Amritsar police,in which it has named four people as conspirators. They include former MLA Veer Singh Lopoke, his son-in-law Rachpal Singh, who is also a police officer,Sorian sarpanch Kulwinder Singh and Block Samiti chairman Sarabjeet Singh Lodhinanagal.
All four have been booked on charges of murder. Our union has been struggling for farmers rights in this region for a long time and these people have been clashing with us, said Kokri.
Takhtupura had recently organised a rally at Ajnala against the police for allegedly killing a youth in police custody.
Eyewitnesses to the murder pointed fingers at the police, saying they wanted to derail the upcoming rally.
