A group of BJP-SAD councillors on Wednesday proceeded to Gujarat to attend a conclave being held there, while Congress councillors, who had earlier given their names, decided to skip the event.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will be to addressing the function on Thursday. The conclave on good governance is being held in Gujarat where councillors from all states were extended invitations.
Initially,Congress councillors had signed up to go to the conclave too. However, they soon withdrew their names as they were reluctant to be associated with a conclave which Modi was to address. The Congress members from a group of women councillors, which was already in Ahmedabad for a tour, had also withdrawn their names.
Group tours of MC councillors have recently been a subject of debate as some members questioned the utility of such tours. A study tour to Kerala was dropped for the same reason. Apart from the BJP questioning the tours,BSP councillor Jannat Jahan had demanded that the reports of previous tours as well as details of the projects that were initiated afterwards should be provided.
For the trip to Gujarat, most of the expenses were to be borne by the Gujarat government. Even then, none of the councillors from Panchkula MC has gone on the tour. Mayor Upender Kaur Ahluwalia said such tours are a waste of money. All information that is required is available on the internet. The funds could instead be used for upgrading facilities in Panchkula, she said.
