Unhappy with the government’s reply on the question of legislator Anil Vij on introduction of MLA Local Area Development (MLA LAD) fund, the vehemently protesting BJP members on Friday staged a walk out from the Haryana Vidhan Sabha on the opening day of the Monsoon Session on Friday.

BJP member Anil Vij argued that the state government must introduce a MLA LAD fund scheme on the pattern of the MPLAD Scheme. But Finance Minister Ajay Yadav in his reply said there was no proposal under consideration of the Haryana government to restore the scheme which had been discontinued in 1996-97 by the Bansi Lal government of which the BJP too was a partner.

Capt Yadav said funds for development were provided to the District Planning Boards of which the local MLAs were members. “The MLAs can recommend their projects to the district planning board and seek funds under the scheme,” the finance minister said.

However, the BJP members in support with the legislators from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) protested that the Opposition members hardly ever got any funds under the scheme.

“The people who voted us to power expect development of their areas. But in the absence of any fund we feel helpless. Most other states of the country have provision for the MLA LAD funds. Why can’t Haryana have this,” Vij argued. When the government refused to budge,Vij,along with other three BJP MLAs staged a walk out during the Question Hour.

Amid noisy protests by the Opposition INLD,the Assembly rushed through its day’s business, including discussion and voting on demands for supplementary grants for the current year,in 30 minutes.

During the Zero Hour, leader of the Opposition Om Parkash Chautala raised the issue of adjournment motion given by his party members on the flood situation in the state. Speaker H S Chatha said the same had been converted into a calling attention notice and clubbed with that of ruling Congress member Sampat Singh. Dissatisfied with the development, there was exchange of words between Chautala and Chatha.
