Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha staged a protest outside the office of the Municipal Corporation on Thursday against the hike in water tariff. Members of BJYM along with some senior leaders of BJP raised slogans against the Congress and demanded a rollback in prices.
The hike in water tariff had been approved in the House meet on Wednesday. Even though BJP and BSP councillors had recorded their dissent on the issue, the hike was approved.
The party activists gathered outside the office of the civic body and raised slogans against the Congress as well as Mayor Anu Chatrath. The protestors who were initially protesting opposite the MC office tried to enter the premises.
However, they were stopped by the police personnel at the gate. The protestors sat outside the gate and raised slogans.
The BJP leaders said that due to the hike, the burden on the common man has increased manifold. The people were already bearing the brunt of inflation with the prices of essential commodities being so high, the hike is unaffordable.
The Congress had promised during elections that no taxes would be imposed. However, the election promise has not been kept, said former MP Satya Pal Jain, while addressing the protestors.
BJP leaders said that even as local Congress MP Pawan Kumar Bansal is the Union Minister for Water Resources, water tariff has been hiked.
BJP city unit vice-president Desh Raj Gupta said the protests against the Congress would continue during the coming days.
The Mayor and Congress councillors would be confronted at public platforms,Gupta said.
General secretary Arun Sood said the manner in which the hike was approved in the MC House meet was undemocratic.
No time was given for a debate on the issue. The residents have been unnecessarily burdened even as pending (water) bills amounting to crores have not been recovered yet.
