Even as the Municipal Corporation constituted its sub-committees on Monday,the BJP cried foul questioning the legality of formation of the committees. While the members of the 12 sub-committees were announced,the two sub-committees of primary health and primary education are still awaiting clearance from the UT Administration.

Of the 12 sub-committees,Congress councillors have been made chairpersons of four. These include committees for water supply and sewerage disposal,sanitation,electricity as well as art,culture and sports. The chairpersons for these committees are likely to be councillors Mukesh Bassi,H C Kalyan,Sheela Devi and Gurbax Rawat.

The BJP councillors will be chairpersons of sub-committees that are considered relatively low profile. While Laxmi Devi is the choice for chairpersonship of the Slum Development Committee,councillor Des Raj Gupta has been made the chairperson of Apni Mandi Committee. In fact,the more vocal of the BJP councillors were not made heads of any sub-committees.

BSP councillor Jannat Jahan-ul-Haq has been made the chairperson of Roads Committee. While Independent councillor Gurcharan Dass Kala will be the chairperson of the Enforcement Committee. Both these committees are among the most sought after by the councillors.

The nominated councillors will also be heading some panels. Surinder Bahga will be the chairperson of the Environment and City Beautification Committee. Dr Aruna Goel will head the Women Empowerment Committee while M P Kohli has been made the head of the Fire and Emergency Services Committee.

BJP had,during the House Meet held in January,raised objections to authorising the Mayor to constitute the sub-committees.

A resolution was moved by the nominated councillors and supported by the Congress for authorising the Mayor to constitute the sub-committees.

BJP councillor Arun Sood said that the formation of the committees is illegal. We will be meeting Secretary Government as well as the Adviser to complain about the manner in which the sub-committees have been constituted, he said.
