Beaten with sticks, bats, Zimbabwean student in Punjab dies; cops arrest 7, rule out hate crime
According to police, the trigger for the assault was an argument that broke out the previous day between Leeroy and the security guard after he found a baseball bat in Leeroy’s car

A 22-year-old Zimbabwean student, who was assaulted by an armed group of people on August 13, has succumbed to his injuries, police said on Friday.
Ziweya Leeroy was allegedly assaulted by eight people including Dilpreet Singh, a guard at Guru Kashi University in Bathinda district’s Talwandi Sabo town. They allegedly used sticks, baseball bats and sharp-edged weapons.
Leeroy, who was pursuing BSc, died Thursday at AIIMS, Bathinda, where he had been admitted with severe head injuries and was on life support.
According to police, the trigger for the assault was an argument that broke out the previous day between Leeroy and the security guard after he found a baseball bat in Leeroy’s car.
A murder charge has now been added to the FIR earlier filed against the eight, seven of whom have been arrested, police said. Both police and university authorities have refrained from giving a clear explanation behind the attack. However, they have denied that it was a hate crime.
The university’s public relations officer Lavlin Sachdeva said the parents of the student have been informed. “The university, with help from the embassy, is sending the body to Zimbabwe.”
