In a bid to improve policing in City Beautiful, the UT Police have decided to revive the age-old beat system in Chandigarh. Already,146 beats in the city have been identified, where 356 police personnel will be deployed. Though the beat system was never abolished, but at present,it existed only on papers.
According to sources, the decision to review the age old police beat system part of which is currently operational was taken a few months ago. Senior police officers had come under flak for shoddy investigation and intelligence gathering into the kidnapping and subsequent killing of five-year-old Khuspreet Singh.
The beat system is in place in many parts of the city and the policemen associated with it are working round-the-clock in three shifts. The entire beat system will start operation from next month. Through this system,we hope to create a safe environment and curb criminal activities, said Chandigarh SSP Naunihal Singh.
Due to shortage of policemen, the beat system had almost got defunct, said an officer. We were short of men,but now,we have sufficient force to revive beat system, he added. Beat officers will also gather intelligence on criminals activities.
Community Relations Unit in-charge Ram Gopal said that 356 police personnel, including women constables, have been deployed for 146 beats in the city divided into three parts. There will be 146 hawaldars,11 sub-inspectors and 147 men constables as well as 52 women constables, said Gopal.
The beat policemen will remain in touch with local police stations of the concerned areas. Beat cops will also look into the complaints registered by residents, he added.
