Bat for a Cause

Could all play and no cause make the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams seem dull? This season, the teams are back with new and improved social causes in their kitty. So recently, when Delhi was in the news for crimes against women,Delhi Daredevils came up with a “Make Delhi Safe for Women” campaign,in association with the Delhi-based NGO,CEQUIN. The television commercial shows a group of boys playing gully cricket,as a girl passes by. The batsman whistles at her and makes a lewd comment, embarrassing the girl.

Delhi Daredevil skipper,Virender Sehwag, steps in and asks the batsman to remove the Delhi Daredevil jersey that he’s wearing — the point being that only he who respects a woman is a true Daredevil.

Earlier this year,Rajasthan Royals organised a marathon for their fans with an aim to support the worldwide movement for health and fitness; and the Mumbai Indians players, including Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh, along with owner Nita Ambani, have been working towards the cause of providing education to underprivileged and disadvantaged children.

Looks like most of the teams in the IPL fifth

season will be batting for a cause, more than

anything else.
