Chandigarh traders have decided to move the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against the Chandigarh Administration for allegedly harassing them by seizing plastic packing material, which is not covered under the ban.
The decision was taken in a meeting of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) and the Grain Market Association, Sector 26, Saturday. The CBM has alleged that plastic containers meant for packing goods were illegally seized from two traders in Sector 41 Friday. President of CBM Charanjeev Singh claimed that the packing material was returned after the matter was brought to the notice of senior officials.
“If multinational companies can use plastic bags for packing their products like milk and bread, there is no reason why the same material cannot be used by traders for packing their products,” said Singh.
The tribunal, in its order, dated December 4, had announced a fine of Rs 5,000 on anyone found using plastic material or dealing in it in the city. Following this, the administration launched a sustained drive against use of plastic. A report in this regard has to be submitted to the tribunal on January 6.
The administration had imposed a similar ban in the city in 2008. However, it produced no results.
Polythene seized
An enforcement team conducted raids at the Grain Market, Sector 26, and Sector 8, and seized a total of 1.5 quintal of plastic bags and glasses. Seven challans were issued to the erring shopkeepers.
