Balancing Act

Getting the body, mind and spirit to a state of equilibrium is Soorya Kaur’s persistent practice.

Getting the body, mind and spirit to a state of equilibrium is Soorya Kaur’s persistent practice. She was 19 when she attended her her first yoga class in the US. That was when Kaur realised that the ancient practice was her calling. In her own words,it was a “part of her heart”,and brought her to India. A founding member of Healthy,Happy, and Holy Organization (3HO),Kaur has over the last 40 years of her practice opened yoga schools throughout the US,Europe, and India. Motivated by a belief that well-being is an act of returning the body, mind and spirit to a state of equilibrium,Kaur was in Chandigarh to conduct a ‘Living Health’ workshop at Kinderpillar School. The workshop combined somatic movements, essential aspects of Kundalini yoga and benefits of eating whole foods. “We will take the movement forward in May and get people to understand that it’s vital to bring balance to the body, mind, and spirit with conscious eating,a positive mind and physical movements,” says Kaur, who is in her mid-sixties.

Somatic Movement Education (SME) is a technique that Kaur will introduce to a larger section of people through workshops in May. According to her,SME is a system of neuromuscular education that teaches us to recognize and release chronic pain patterns, resulting from injury, stress, repetitive motion strain,or habituated postures. Somatic exercises are slow and specialised movements.
