The play Sirhind Di Diwar boasts the combined talents of two great Indian legends the playwright Harpal Tiwana, who has told the story, and ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, who gave it soul-stirring music. The play was staged at Delhis Kamani Auditorium yesterday in an effort to highlight the works of these icons as well as revisit a passage from our history.
The play brings alive the splendour of Mughal emperor Aurangzebs court, and the oppression and atrocities committed by Wazir Khan, the Governor of Sirhind. The saga overlaps with the early days of the Sikh faith, the supreme sacrifice of Sahibzadas Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, and the valour of Guru Gobind Singh.
Through this performance,we intend to honour the contribution of Harpal Tiwana to Punjabi theatre and of Jagjit Singh to Indian music, says Manpal Tiwana of Harpal Tiwana Foundation,Patiala, and the director of the play. Singh and Harpals most important works together include Long Da Lishkara
and Diva Bale Saari Raat, both of which are Punjabi plays and movies, besides Sirhind
Di Diwar.
The Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts in Patiala was inaugurated last year, and Singh, who died in October, had been one of the moving forces behind it. In March, the centre was the venue of the premiere of Sirhind Di Diwar, which is now on a nationwide tour.
The play is also a campaign to bestow the Bharat Ratna on Jagjit, and to rename the Siri Fort Auditorium in Delhi after him in the light of his record number of performances at the venue, adds Tiwana. The director has recreated the grandeur of his fathers subject with imaginative sets, lighting, costumes and performances by Neena Tiwana,a Sangeet Natak Academy Award recipient,Nirmal Rishi and others.
