Back to Basics

Blame it on the human mind but we tend to remember only what we want to.

Kiran Bedi & Pavan Choudary re-sensitise us about civic sense through their book Broom & Groom

Blame it on the human mind but we tend to remember only what we want to. The rest finds a place in some remote corner of the brain and bringing some lost lessons in civic sense to the forefront are India’s first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi and TV host and management guru Pavan Choudary. This in their book Broom & Groom, which was released at SD College,Sector 32,today. “The book is an expression of both anguish and hope. Anguish over the inadequate civic sense in our society. Hope, because we believe that once we become aware and sensitive, change will follow,” says Bedi, who calls the book a mirror for self reflection and a behavioural compass which will improve community living and enhance our social acceptance, globally.

While the book focuses on hygiene and grooming and talks about the basics — right from greetings, table manners, mobile and internet sense, rules for queues to relationships,“We want to bring in a social renaissance of civil behaviour through the book,” chips in Choudary, who’s happy that former president APJ Abdul Kalam too has added a message in the book.

With about 30 illustrations depicting the wrongs that we do including distorting public property, stepping into others personal space and disrespecting domestic help, the book is a ready guide to maintaining balanced behaviour. “One that will make you globally acceptable and facilitate social mobility,” says Bedi, who’s hopeful that the book will contribute to creating awareness and helping people lead a good life, form a good society, and thereby a good nation.

Take a Stand

Kiran Bedi invites all to join the anti-corruption drive for the Lokpal Bill that will be hosted on January 30. “This will start at 11:30 am from Sector 26 and conclude near the Sector 17 fountain at 1:30 pm.” Bedi tells us that the drive has been patronised by the likes of Swami Ramdev,Sri Sri Ravi Shankar,Swami Agnivesh and Anna Hazare. “Through the India Against Corruption movement,we want everybody to come together to demand comprehensive reforms of anti-corruption systems in India,” she says.
