Back in action

I was in a bad financial situation and I had to address a few things.

Wanted is your first release in four years. What went wrong after No Entry in 2005?
I was in a bad financial situation and I had to address a few things. It took me two years to restructure myself and my finances. I then started work on Wanted and It’s My Life in August 2007. This year,I have three releases lined up,which also includes the long-awaited Shahid Kapoor-Kareena Kapoor starrer Milenge Milenge.

But No Entry was a huge hit. It sure must have helped you clear your debts.
Each thing takes its own course.

During No Entry, there was news of you going bankrupt. This time,a financer has asked you to cough up Rs 9 crore that you borrowed or he would stall the relase of Wanted.
A movie of this calibre always garners a lot of attention. There are always hiccups of a varied degree —some movies have a problem with the song, some with the title,I have a financial problem. It will get sorted sooner or later.

Wanted is this year’s biggest action film. Are your hopes pinned on this one?
Which producer doesn’t want a hit? After seeing the film in various stages of production,I am confident it will do well.

Formula films are not quite the rage these days. Didn’t you want to try out something safe?
It is not a formula film: I would call it a fun-filled comprehensive mainstream film. It has action, drama and romance of a different kind. And I have always put my money in films that are different — Mr India,Paanch and Company.

Moreover,it’s pitted against Yash Raj Films’ Dil Bole Hadippa!.
All the best to them.

You have a lot of faith in Prabhudheva,a debut director.
He had directed the Tamil version Pokkiri, and he introduced a lot of nuances in the Hindi one, which was amazing.

Every producer has stories to tell about Salman Khan.
I have only good stories to narrate about Salman. He was cooperation personified and a dream actor for any producer.

You seem to have remade as many as 14 South Indian films. Why?
Bollywood has a dearth of good writers as compared to the South. And some good directors like Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali work for their own production houses. Next year I am remaking two more romantic South Indian movies.

With corporates becoming production houses, like UTV,is it difficult for individuals to sustain in Bollywood?
They are not producers, just financiers. I am a field producer who is involved with the making of the movie from start to end.

Why did you never want to direct a film?
I started off as an assistant editor and assistant director. Then life took a different turn. If I get an opportunity,I will direct.

Post Slumdog Millionaire,Anil Kapoor is a huge draw. Are you planning any projects with your brother?
He is a part of my next two films — Mr India 2 and No Entry 2 — and obviously will play a major role.

Will Mr India 2 be Sridevi’s comeback vehicle as well?
If I tell you everything there will not be any surprises.
