A day after cops were attacked by rowdy youths in Mauli Jagran,the police arrested one of the accused today. He has been identified as Om Prakash,while the other three accused Jatinder,Dhamma and Ranjit Singh are still at large.
Sub-inspector Sikander (50) and constable Sandeep Kumar (22) were attacked when they tried to stop the tussle between two groups late Monday night. The police had received a call of molestation of a woman. As the two policemen intervened to resolve the scuffle,youths vented it out on them. Constable Sandeep was hit on the nose with a rod,following which SI Sikander was beaten up too.
The raging youths then picked up bricks and attacked Sikander on his back. Leaving both cops injured,they ran away. Sikander and Sandeep were rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16,where Sandeep had to undergo a surgery for fractured nose.
The constable sustained serious injury on the nose and had to undergo surgery while Sikanders condition is stable and he is recuperating well, said in-charge of Mauli Jagran police post,Gurmukh Singh. The Police have registered a case under Sections 332,308,353,506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code on the statement of the sub-inspector in Mani Majra police station.
Not the first time
Mauli Jagran has witnessed many such incidents in the past too. The area of Mauli Jagran has emerged as the most crime-sensitive area in the city. Incidents of violence are increasing at an alarming rate. On a number of occasions,the Mauli Jagran police post has also been subjected to stone-pelting. Against a population of nearly 1 lakh,there are just 20 policemen,ranging from constables to inspectors.
Past incidents
* March 30,2010 :A group of youths pelted stones at a police team damaged their motorcycle. A team of the Mauli Jagran police post was on a routine patrol when a group of around 10 persons were found quarreling in the area. The group entered an argument with the police team and attacked it with stones to escape.
* March 28,2010 : Two motorcyclists in an inebriated condition entered in an argument with the policemen at a picket and attacked them.
* August 25,2009: Five youths of Mauli Jagran attacked a police party that went to the spot following information of a brawl around midnight. The miscreants pelted the police party with stones and assaulted them with sticks,leaving two of them injured.
They also smashed the windscreen of the police gypsy.
