It’s a special occasion as the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi readies to honour 10 personalities from the city in recognition of their distinguished contribution to the field of art. The 10 senior artists who will be honoured with the Amrita Sher-Gil Samman have created a niche for themselves in the fields of art history,painting,sculpture and poetry. Like citys architect Le Corbusier,who at heart was an artist,and MS Randhawa,the first Chief Commissioner of Chandigarh whose contributions to the promotion of art and culture are universally recognised,the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi,by honouring these practitioners of art,strives to take forward the vision of Corbusier and Randhawa who wanted the city to be a hub of artistic and cultural activities.

The coveted list begins with Nek Chand,artist and environmentalist extraordinaire,who created the Rock Garden. Exhibiting the concept of re-use and recycle in sculpting armies of figures from broken glass bangles,tiles,sanitary and electrical fittings,Rock Garden has achieved worldwide fame.

Acclaimed as an undisputed authority on Indian art,especially Pahari painting and the history of Indian costumes,art historian Prof BN Goswamy will be honoured for his invaluable contribution to the plastic and visual arts,and art history. Dr DC Bhattacharyya is an undisputed authority on Buddhist iconography and will be facilitated for his invaluable contribution to the history of art. Painter and art promoter Jodh Singh; sculptor,painter,designer and teacher Shiv Singh; painter Malkit Singh; Balwinder,former Principal of Government College; artist Satwant Singh who creates terracotta sculptures; and S Raj Kumar are other recipients of the honour,with the only woman in the group being Nirupama Dutt,selected for her work in art criticism,Punjabi poetry and short fiction.

The Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT,Chandigarh,Shivraj V Patil,will confer the Amrita Sher-Gil Samman at the auditorium of Government Museum and Art Gallery on July 17 at 5.30 pm.
