Man gets 2 years’ jail for fraud

A special CBI court of Chandigarh on Thursday awarded two year sentence to Rajwant Singh in a corruption matter dates back to 2008. The complainant,Sukhwinder Singh,had alleged that he had approached Rajwant,who was working in deputy commissioner’s (DCs) office in Mohali for issuing red card meant for riot victims. Sukhwinder Singh had stated that his father was a victim of 1984 riots. As per the government policy the riot victims get a red card under which they are provided with a relief of Rs 2 lakh. Singh allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 for issuing the “red card”. CBI had laid a trap and a case was registered against Rajwant in April,2008.

Firearms banned at weddings,parties

District Magistrate Parveen Kumar has imposed a ban on the carrying of firearms in marriages,parties or any other social functions across the district with immediate effect. The prohibitory order issued under Section 144 of the CrPC will remain in force till November 13. An official release said the ban was imposed on the recommendation of Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar,who had recently written to the DM that in several marriages,parties and other social functions,some people carry firearms,and after getting drunk,fire the shots in air,which at times proves fatal. The SSP had asked for a blanket ban on this.

One held for trespassing
The police on Thursday arrested a cook employed with a senior Punjab Police official in a case of trespassing. The accused entered into the house of a journalist with a national news channel in Sector 39 on Wednesday night. The accused was in an inebriated condition when caught.
