Patient booked for cheating hospital
MOHALI: A patient and her two relatives have been booked for allegedly cheating a local private hospital,the police said on Friday. Ivy Hospital Administrative Coordinator Nischal Singh reported to the police that a resident of Kurukshetra,Roop Kaur,was admitted to the hospital on July 11,2009,with a paralysis attack by her son-in-law Bikramjit Singh. Gurpreet Singh,a resident of Phase X,had stood a guarantor for the patient. According to the complainant,the total bill of the patients treatment stood at Rs 5.23 lakh but only Rs 2.8 lakh was deposited and the remaining amount was pending. The police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 406,420 and 120-B of the IPC. No arrests were confirmed.
Two held with illegal arms,ammunition
MOHALI: Two persons were arrested with illegal arms and ammunition from different parts of the district,the police said on Friday. Sanjay Kumar,who is allegedly the tenant of a sarpanch of Saidpur village in Mohali,was arrested from near Kurali with a .315 bore pistol and a live cartridge,of which he failed to show any valid licence. In another case,Deep Chand of Raipur village in Mohali was held from Sahoran near Kharar with a .315 bore countrymade loaded pistol,of which he had no valid licence. The police have booked both the accused under Sections 25,54 and 59 of the Arms Act and begun interrogations.
Two held with 1 kg opium
MOHALI: A native of Kaithal in Haryana,Sanjeev Kumar Gupta and his accomplice Satish Kumar of Morinda,were arrested with one kg opium near Mohali,the police said. Both the youths were coming on a Honda Activa from Landran when they were intercepted. On checking,they were found to be in possession of the contraband,which the police estimate costs Rs 1 lakh. The police have booked the alleged drug peddlers under Sections 18,61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and begun their custodial interrogation to ascertain their modus operandi and links.
City to get two more gardens
CHANDIGARH: Union Minister for Tourism,Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of Garden of Conifers in Sector 52 and Garden of Palms,Sector 42,on Monday. The creation of the two gardens is aimed at developing the southern sectors as a tourist attraction. Adjoining the artificial lake that was created in Sector 42,the Administration plans to develop the Garden of Palms on 25 acres. A tourism adventure park with a cycle track to promote bicycle tourism has also been planned. Palm trees of more than 50 species will be planted. A tourist information centre will also be created along with public conveniences at the two gardens.
Plots should be sold only after registration
AMBALA: Haryana Revenue Minister Shiv Charan Sharma said there was a need to change the procedure of sale of plots through transfer in HUDA colonies in the state. He said the state government was incurring losses because plots were being sold through transfer without executing the registration deed. Sharma added that HUDA should frame a new policy with regard to transfer of vacant plots and should be sold through registration. He was in the city to preside over Bhagwan Parshuram Jayanti Samoroh in Ambala City on Friday. In reply to a query,the minister said property dealers should be registered and no one should be allowed to do business without permission of the government. Earlier,a Shobha Yatra was taken out in the city to mark the Parshuram Jayanti.
Head constable suspended on graft charges
AMBALA: A head constable was placed under suspension by Superintendent of Police Bharti Arora for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 100 from a truck driver at the Durganagar police barrier in Ambala City on Thursday night. Harkesh had allegedly demanded bribe from ASP Abhishek Garg,who was disguised as conductor of the truck. The trap was laid on receiving complaints against the head constable by the SP that he was harassing truck drivers. While on traffic duty,Harkesh was earlier transferred as punishment.
Two held for smuggling liquor
AMBALA: As many as 940 bottles of countrymade and foreign liquor were confiscated at the Naraingarh turn on NH-72 near Shehzadpur by the police who had received secret information of the contraband being smuggled to other states from Chandigarh. The police team headed by SHO Somesh intercepted the truck which was loaded with 750 cases of countrymade liquor and 190 of English wine. Truck driver Satish and conductor Parvinder were arrested under the Excise Act.
Singing contest tomorrow
CHANDIGARH: As part of the silver jubilee celebrations,Yaadgar-e-Rafi Society,Chandigarh,will hold a singing contest for the Best Singer Award-2010 on Sunday at Punjab Kala Bhawan,Sector 16,Chandigarh at 8 am. Heart camp for senior citizens
CHANDIGARH: The Senior Citizens Welfare Association,Modern Housing Complex,Manimajra,organised a free heart check up camp in collaboration with Fortis Hospital,Mohali,at the Community Centre Duplex on Friday. Dr G S Kalra,director,Fortis,headed a team of doctors and para-medical staff to carry out various tests. More than 150 senior citizens benefited from the camp. Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in senior citizens and while men have a significantly higher rate of heart problems,women after menopause are vulnerable to heart conditions as well, said Dr Kalra. MC councillor Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri (Retd) was the chief guest. He assured that functioning of community centers will be streamlined and the governing bodies strengthened.
