CHANDIGARH: The Fire and Emergency Services Committee of the Municipal Corporation has decided to install fire alarm systems in all civic body buildings,as per a decision on Wednesday. While the civic body is responsible for ensuring compliance with the fire safety norms throughout the city,its own buildings leave much to be desired. The committee members decided that consolidated report of notices of violations served to defaulters should be submitted fortnightly. A committee has also been constituted regarding the finalisation of insurance for firemen. The committee will include Devinder Singh Babla,Brig K S Chandpuri (Retd),Arshad Khan as well as concerned officers of the Fire department.

General Hospital mortuary refrigerator not working

PANCHKULA: The family members of Pushpal,a resident of Azad Colony,protested at the mortuary of General Hospital,Sector 6,as his body was emitting a foul smell. Abdul Mian,a family friend,said that they were informed that the refrigerator was not working. The body had come for post mortem and was to be handed over to the family members on Wednesday. Abdul Mian said that they wanted to take the body to his parental village,but fearing that the body could degenerate further,they decided to carry out the funeral in Manimajra. The refrigerator in the mortuary keeps the body from decomposing,but now family members can be seen bringing ice slabs to stop the bodies from decomposing. Medical Suprintendent,Dr Usha Gupta said,“The refrigerator has not been working for two-three days. It will be rectified soon. Till then ice slabs are being used.”

BJP protest Cong ‘atrocities’ in Mirchpur case

CHANDIGARH: BJP held a protest at the Housing Board lightpoint against the alleged atrocities of the Congress government in Haryana,in the Mirchpur case. BJP workers raised slogans and burnt the effigy of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The party workers said that they would carry on with such agitations till all the accused are arrested.

Court sends superintendent to police custody

PANCHKULA: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Kanchan Mahi sent Suprintendent of health department at Karnal,Subhash Gupta,to 14-day judicial custody on Wednesday. He was allegedly caught red handed on Tuesday by the CBI for accepting a bribe of Rs 22,000. He had demanded the money to clear up a bill from transport contractor Sompal.

Anti-encroachment drive at furniture market

CHANDIGARH: An anti-encroachment drive was carried out on Wednesday by the enforcement wing of the Municipal Corporation in furniture market,Sector 34. During the drive,items like sofas,beds,dining tables,bundles of foam,mattresses,chairs etc. lying on the municipal land were removed. As many as 47 challans were handed out with more that five truck loads of materials being seized.
