No construction near ammo depot

MOHALI: District Magistrate (DM) Varun Roojam has declared 1,200 square yards area in the radius of Ammunition Depot at Dappar in Mohali district as a no-construction zone. The burning of crops in the area has also been banned with immediate effect. The DM issued the prohibitory order under Section 144 of the CrPC after the Station Commander,Dappar,brought to his notice that the Union Defence Ministry has issued notification prohibiting construction activity in the vicinity of the ammunition depots. “Keeping in view the safety and security of the ammunition depot besides the public at large,no construction will be allowed in the prohibited area,” said Roojam.

CM to hear woes of the public on June 17

MOHALI: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will hold a Sangat Darshan programme to hear and solve the public grievances on the spot at Nayagaon,close to Chandigarh,on June 17. Chairing a special meeting of the district officials,Mohali Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam asked them to make all preparations for the programme besides preparing the detailed reports of the ongoing projects of their respective departments. He also asked the entire district administration to ensure their presence at the Sangat Darshan programme.

Sugar mills’ staffers launch protest

MOHALI: The officers and workers of cooperative sugar mills in the state launched an indefinite protest,on Friday,in front of the Sugarfed headquarters in Mohali. Under the banner of the Cooperative Sugar Mills Workers Federation and Sugar Mills Common Cadre Welfare and Technical Association,the protesters,including the family members of the officers and workers,were up in arms against the government for not extending the benefits of the Sixth Pay Commission to them so far besides non-fulfillment of their other long-pending demands. The employees’ union leaders Hardeep Singh Sarangal and Karnail Singh Lakhmipur said that to mount pressure on the government,an eleven-member group of protesters have begun a chain hungerstrike,which will continue till the acceptance of their demands.
