3 get life term for killing taxi driver
Chandigarh: A lower court today awarded life imprisonment to three for murdering a tax driver. The incident dates back to 2004. Those convicted are Nishan Singh,Kulbir Singh and Shamsher Singh. Residents of Gurdaspur,the trio had murdered taxi driver Balwinder Singh. As per prosecution,Nishan Singh,Kulbir Singh and his cousin Shamsher Singh reached Chandigarh on a motorcycle on June 28,2004. They reached the taxi stand and hired an Indica car. The trio had an intention to make money by selling the car after killing the driver. A penalty of Rs 5,000 has been slapped on the trio by the court. Prosecution further added that after reaching a deserted place on the bank of the canal near Harchowal in Gurdaspur,they allegedly strangled Balwinder Singh with a string. The trio then threw the body into the canal.
26-year-old killed in road mishap
Chandigarh: A 26-year-old resident of Sector 41 was killed after he rammed his bike into a tree here last night. The mishap took place on the road dividing Sectors 37 and 38 last night. The victim,Bharat Lal,was on his way back home when the mishap occurred. The accident occurred when the biker tried to avoid hitting some vehicle or a stray animal and lost his control over his motorcycle,the police said. The police said the victim was rushed to the PGI but he was declared dead on arrival. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow. In a separate mishap,Prem Pal,a resident of Sector 15,Panchkula was injured after a Mahindra Pick-Up truck (PB 65-GT 5885) collided with his motorcycle near Railway crossing in Daria village on Tuesday. The victim was admitted to the Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital. The police has arrested the truck driver Ram Bahadur,a resident of Sector 19,Panchkula on charges of causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving.
Section 144 imposed in Ambala
Ambala: Ambala District Magistrate Sameer Pal Srow has prohibited the gathering of five or more person,carrying of weapon of offence like fire-arms,swords,lathis,barchhas,kulharis,jellies,gandasis,knives and other weapons on the premises of schools or colleges and in the area of 200 metres around the examination centres in Ambala under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure,1973. The mobile phone will also be prohibited in examination centers from October 14 to November 4. Further,all photocopy shops within a radius of 200 metres of examination centre will remain closed from 11 am to5 pm during the examination day.
To remove encroachments,Section 72 imposed in Ambala markets
Ambala: To remove traffic congestion,prohibitory orders under Section 72 of the Haryana Police Act came into effect from today. Under this,shopkeepers in main markets,chowks and bazaars of Rai Market,Sadar Bazaar,Sarafa Bazaar,Nicholson Road and Sabzi Mandi to Sadar Bazaar Chowk areas have been asked to remove encroachments. Superintendent of Police Sashank Anand had earlier held a meeting with the shopkeepers and businessmen and had asked them to remove encroachments by October 12 after which the police action would be taken against the violator including 6-month jail and a fine of Rs 10,000.
Orissa government awards Patiala girl for social service
Patiala: THE Orissa government has honoured Nancy Ghuman,President of Rainbow Society for Special Children,Panjab,by giving her a national award for her outstanding contribution towards the development of special children. A team of special children under Rainbow Societys banner went to Cuttack,Orissa,to participate in dance and drama competition,which was held from 19 to 30 September for national level and from October 1 to 5,2010,for international level,where various teams from different states of India and 13 countries from all over the world have participated. On this occasion,Damodar Raot,Agriculture Minister as representative of Orissa Govt. honoured Nancy Ghuman with the National/International Kala Bhushan-2010 (Plaque of Honour).
Gurmat Sangeet Samagam held at Punjabi University
Patiala: On the second day of the 7th Gurmat Sangeet Utsav being organized by the Department of Gurmat Sangeet,Punjabi University,Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh exhorted the religious musicians and Keertankars to preserve the sacred old traditions of Gurmat Sangeet. In a packed to its capacity,Diwan at Bebe Nanaki Sangeet Park,Jaspal Singh appreciated the Gurmat Sangeet Department and Gurmat Sangeet Chair of the University and Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee for extending its fullest cooperation towards the promotion and propagation of Gurmat Sangeet nationally and internationally. He also lauded for making their best efforts in preserving the age old traditions of Gurmat Sangeet .
Denied share in property,youth attacks father,grandfather
Mohali: After being denied the ownership of inherited property of the family,a youth attacked his father and grandfather and left them seriously injured at Jandpur village in Mohali late last evening,the police said here today.
Satwinder Singh,in his mid-50s,and his septuagenarian father Dilbagh Singh sustained multiple injuries and were admitted to Civil Hospital,the Investigating Officer (IO) Avtar Singh told Newsline.
Satwinder reported to the police that his son Gurjant Singh,in his mid-20s,who he alleged was a drug addict,was asking him and his father to transfer the ownership of their inherited property on his name in the revenue record. Since he was an addict and was in bad company,we refused to fulfill his demand,following which he brought along two of his unknown friends and attacked me and my father with batons and rods in our house, Satwinder told the police. Booked for causing grievous injuries,Gurjant and his two unknown friends were still on the run,the IO claimed,while adding that raids were on to nab the accused.
Seminar on teacher-student relationship held
Chandigarh: A seminar on healthy relationship between student and teacher was organised at the Government Senior Secondary School at Sector -38 (W) in Dadumajra by the UT Education Department.
P K Sharma,Director Public Instruction (Schools) was the chief guest on the occasion. Vijay Kumar,DSP South Chandigarh,District Education Officer (DEO) Chanchal Singh,Deputy DEO Dilbagh Singh,Professor Manjeet Singh,Dr Vandana Aggarwal lecturer BEd College,Sector 20,and Parent Teacher Association President Noor Mohammad recorded their presence in the seminar.
P K Sharma interacted with students by making an easy rapport with them. He quoted examples from the spiritual epics and instances from day to day life to motivate them to imbibe moral values. Students were inspired to respect their elders and to focus on those activities which help them to achieve their goals. He emphasized that positive teacher-student relationship is directly associated with behavioural competence and adjustment of students. He further conveyed that children can be groomed into wholesome personalities in a safe home and school environment which is based on trust and mutual respect. He urged parents to ensure peaceful and congenial environment at home shunning home violence which leads to many psychological behavioural problems.
Collective efforts by parents,teacher and community can help children to realize them their potential for excelling in life. Vijay Kumar DSP South expressed his views on the teacher-student relationship and advised the students to be disciplined and to keep away from the menace of drugs. Chanchal Singh DEO,pointed out the difference between the facilities which were available to the students of their time and the students of present era. So now students should take the full advantage of the modern facilities. Professor Manjeet singh motivated students that they should channelize their energy towards constructive works. They should understand the relationship between school campus and community and use their intellect and energy to provide practical solutions to the problem of community instead of creating problems.
During her interaction,Dr Vandana Aggarwal of Government College of Education,Chandigarh,established an open communication with students,parent and teachers,her interactive and highly motivational talk helped students open up and provide constructive feedback on the issues associated with corporal punishment. Students put forth their ideas to avert untoward incidents related to corporeal punishment. They also asserted their opinions about the way and means to create congenial and peaceful atmosphere at school.
Involving parent and teachers in interaction,she further stressed that providing emotional support to children at home and school,appreciating their talent and merit and promoting their self esteem are the alternative ways to create a loving and fearless environment to groom them to be responsible citizens. Noor Mohammad PTA President also addressed the gathering and emphasized that parents and community school join hand with the school to infuse values amongst students. Principal Baljinder Singh expressed his gratitude and thanked the guests for sparing their valuable time and assured them to act accordingly.
