Two held for raping minor
Fight outside Nada Sahib Gurdwara
Panchkula: A fight broke out between two families of shopkeepers outside Nada Sahib Gurdwara here late in the night. At About 9:30 pm,Manjit Singhs family was allegedly beating up a child,when Ranjot Singh and Lakhminder Singh,both cousins,who are also shopkeepers,intervened.A fight ensued in which Manjit Singh,Gurmeet Singh,Beet Singh,Gurpreet Singh and Joginder Singh,all from one family,allegedly attacked us with kirpan,sword and rods, said Lakhminder Singh. Both the families hail from Nada Sahib village. Soon the police was called. DSP (crime) Ram Chander Rathi also reached the spot. The attackers were apprehended till the filing of the news report,but a formal FIR was yet to be filed. Meanwhile,the victims-Ranjot and Lakhminder reached the hospital from the Chandimandir Police station on their own in an autorickshaw. We have been asked to get the medical examination done on our own. The police said that we do not have force to take you the hospital, alleged Rajinder Singh,brother of Ranjot Singh.
We are investigating the case. It was a fight between the two groups. The FIR will be registered soon, said Inspector Jangsher Singh,SHO of Chandimadir Police Station.
2 boys drown
Sas Nagar: Two boys drowned in a seasonal river at village Dhanauda near Kharar where they had gone to take a bath. The deceased have been identified as Jagmohan (11) and Gurpreet Singh(15). Jagmohan was a resident of Dhanauda while Gurpreet belonged to Ropar and had come to meet his maternal grandparents. On Monday,at 10 in the morning,the two boys took off from their house to take bath near a tube well in the fields. When the two did not return till evening the parents grew worried and went in search of them. On finding a towel and slippers near the river Tida,the family members informed the police about the incident. On Tuesday morning,a police team accompanied by divers flushed out the bodies of the two youths. Amrit Lal,investigating officer,while speaking to the Newsline,said,The bodies of the two boys have been handed over to the family members after conducting a postmortem.
Civic body honours war widows
CHANDIGARH: While the Mayor heaped praises on the councillors,only nine out of 35 councillors turned up for the function.
The civic body honoured war widows during the Independence Day function.Families of 10 freedom fighters were also honoured on the occasion.
PGI okayed 130 projects in six months
Chandigarh:The research work at the prestigious institute,PGI,got a significant push with 130 research projects sanctioned in last six months,said Dr Vinay Sakhuja,director PGI in his Independence Day speech. He added that the doctors of the institute attracted an external grant of around Rs 9 crore for these projects.
I-Day function held in Ward 21
Chandigarh: The Bahujan Samaj Party celebrated Independence Day in different parts of the city. At Bapu Dham,BSP convenor Haffiz Anwar-ul-Haq and senior leader S M Khan unfurled the national flag. Addressing the gathering the leaders said that 60 per cent of the population is suffering from unemployment and poverty. A function was organised in Ward 21.
Free medical camp held for senior citizens
Chandigarh: Tara Ummat Foundation and Citizens Awareness Group celebrated Independence Day by organising a free medical check-up camp for senior citizens in collaboration with Tricity Hospitals at Old Age Home,Sector 15. Specialists from the fields of cardiology and orthopaedics checked the patients and advised further action in each case. National flags were distributed to all the residents and senior citizens.
SBI Patiala celebrates I-Day through charity
PATIALA: State Bank of Patiala celebrated Independence Day at its head office here with Ashok Nayar,Managing Director of the Bank hoisting the flag. A cultural programme was organised where Bank employees,children from SOS Village,Patiala and children from Deaf and Dumb School,Patiala participated. Nayar donated a van to the Red Cross Society,Patiala under the banks community service initiative. Six tricycles were distributed among the handicapped persons.
