HC stay on govt house allotment to continue
Chandigarh: The stay on allotment of government houses will continue till February 21,as the Punjab and Haryana High Court adjourned a case in this regard on Wednesday. The UT Administration has sought time to furnish information demanded by the court. Peeved over the conduct of higher officials who do not vacate government houses allotted to them,Justice Surya Kant had demanded a list of such officials and the houses occupied by them.
Two more high schools coming up in UT
Chandigarh: The Administration has approved Rs 1.82 crore for the construction of government high school in Kaimbwala and Rs 2.80 crore for a high school at Pocket No 1 in Manimajra. The decisions were taken in the plan review meet on the utilisation of funds for civil works under SSA. To strengthen the infrastructure of schools and capacity keeping in view the Right to Education Act the Administration has to maintain a per child ratio of 1:40. Accordingly,new schools are being proposed in 2011-12 in addition to the five under-construction schools.
Tribute to actor Vivek Shauq
Chandigarh: Around 150 artists from Chandigarh held a condolence meeting for comedian-cum-actor-Vivek Shauq at Kala Bhawan on Tuesday. Shauq had passed away on January 10. Born in Chandigarh,he did his schooling and college in the city.
Three dowry cases in Ambala
Ambala: Dowry cases were registered against the in-laws of three women in the districts sub-division police stations in a day. All cases pertained to harassment and torture of the victims by their husbands and in-laws. While Taranjit Kaur,a resident of Ravi Dass Basti Naraingarh,lodged a complaint against her husband Kaka Singh and his parents,Geeta daughter of Tarlok Singh,a resident of village Jalubi in Barara sub-division has accused her husband Ajay of harassment. In the third case,Jaswinder Kaur,daughter of Labh Singh a resident of village Sonta lodged a complaint in Ambala sub-division against her husband Surjit and his parents. The three women currently stay with their parents.
No arrest yet in Berkeley robbery case
Panchkula: The Panchkula SP has formed 15 teams to solve the murder and robbery at Berkeley Automobiles at Industrial Area Phase 1 in Panchkula. But even after two days of the incident,no arrests have been made. Police teams have been sent to various areas in Haryana,Punjab and Chandigarh for probe purposes.
Two die in separate accidents
Ambala: Two persons died in separate accidents on Wednesday. While Jarnail Singh a resident Baibalpur was killed when his motorcycle collided with an auto,a woman died after she was run over by a bus near general bus stand in Ambala Cantonment. The victim was identified as Monika,a resident of Baltana.
PU to hold seminar on problems of women
Chandigarh: The department-cum-centre for women studies in Panjab University will hold a seminar on Women and Culture: Embodied Realities and Social Constructions on January 21 at ICSSR Complex on the varsity campus. Department coordinator Dr Manvinder Kaur and chairperson Dr Rajesh Gill said the seminar will focus on how women are represented in the society,female foeticide,honour killings and domestic violence,among others.
UIHMT holds seminar on industry
Chandigarh: The Student Academic Committee of the University Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism (UIHMT) organised a workshop on Academics: Industry Interface on the Panjab University campus on Wednesday. The programme included specialised deliberations on various aspects of hotel and tourism industry,in which,students of BSc Hospitality and Hotel Administration and Tourism Management courses participated.
